D800E and CF card formatting

Hi - I've just got a s/hand D800E and going through the menu's etc setting up the four menu banks - that all seems fine, just like the other N's i've owned.
But I have a problem in that it will recognise and format SD cards but won't 'see' CF cards, all are SanDisk Extreme III or IV so on the list of cards for the D800E.

Tried from the menu, double button, formatting the card in windows etc but the cards are just not recognised by the camera?

Anyone any ideas how I might get round this?

Up-dated the firware too in case that might be an issue - still not seeing the CF cards...

I use the SanDisk Extreme Pro 160mb without a problem.

Here is Nikons official list:

When you put the card in the camera does the little green led on the back come on for a few seconds.

Have you tried a different CF card ? or does the problem occur with more than one.

Thanks Dave,
Yes all my cards are 'approved' SanDisk SDCFX or SDCFH all from a reputable dealer, none off the net. 7 cards in all, none are seen by the camera yet all have been used in Nikon cameras previously - D3s/D700.

I can live with SD cards but it would be great to have a second option.

I don't have your camera but using a magnifying glass check the 2 rows of pins in the CF slot. They are very fragile and easily broken, which is why serial SD cards are better. However, if you get the CF slot working and can get large cards, CF is still faster than most SD cards and only limited in speed by in-camera processing.

The usual path to disaster is a CF card is badly inserted into a CF card reader on a PC. A pin breaks off and stays stuck in the card. The next time that card goes in the camera, the blocked pin socket crunches the camera pin. I did manage to straighten a pin once on a reader, but it is 50-50 chance of success or the pin breaks.
