800 or 800E

As many people want to switch to the 810, a few bargains have appeared in the local used market. I'm just wondering if an E would be worth the 700$ difference. I could get an 800 for the price of a 610 and... well you know what happens when NAS strikes...:culpability:

Marcel as you know I have owned both and well lets say that I am happy with my 'E'.

For comparison here is a Lion shot with the D800.

Thanks Scott, but 700$ more... Anyway, I'm on the fence about this purchase, lurking at the 810, or just not spending another buck on a camera... I've got some that I've been happy with so far. I think it's just NAS.

Marcel, are you talking new, refurb or used? I ask only because I'm looking to sell or trade my D800 and if the market has fallen that much I need to at least account for that.

All I can say is that were I to do it again I would get the 800e. The lack of OLPF does make a marked difference in IQ, after seeing what the D7100 looks like.

I regularly see used D800's for between US$1750-1850 on Fred Miranda's and Nikonians. I've seen a few D800E's around the US$2000-2100 mark. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong either way. (Full Disclosure: I bought a used D800 in late January on Fred Miranda for US$2000 and have not regretted the move at all.)

Less than 3000 actuations, 1875$. Less than half a 810 when you consider taxes...

Compared to the original price when the D800e was released vs current used prices, that is already a substantial price discount.

My D800e is my favorite camera between the D700 and D3s that I have owned.

Happy Shopping!

Makes me wonder if I'd just be better off keeping it in my drawer for those times when I'm going to want/need that resolution rather than taking a $1000 hit on it. Unless I can wrangle a trade.

I thought of selling my d800e for a d810, but the price drops are just too great. Guess I'll keep my d800e for a few more years.

I'm curious why are you considering selling it?

Personally, I don't see a difference in 99% of my shots between it and my D600. I just picked up a second, gripped D600 for dirt cheap (now getting serviced - who knows, it could become a 610?), and a D7100 for my wildlife images. The D800 was supposed to play the role of 2nd camera and wildlife camera, but the files are so dang big, and at a max of 4 fps it just doesn't shoot fast enough when I want to grab birds in flight. The D7100's buffer barfs after 1 second (a problem), but I can work with that. The huge files I'm getting from the 800 get cropped in LR, but the original NEF is still 36MP's, and shooting in DX mode tends to be an issue when I'm trying to frame a flying bird and keep it on the smaller areas so I don't often use DX mode unless the subject is stationary.

It's a great camera, but I just prefer using the D600/610. And if it's not getting used I'm thinking I should move it for something I can use, like a 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII.

Well, this makes me think and also makes me wonder if I should or shouldn't get it... If you don't see a difference between the 600 and 800 shots, then I probably won't... And I've already had written and thought that I did NOT need the extra definition and file size... Ah man, why is it so tempting then.. If only I was poor and didn't have the money the question wouldn't even be asked. :)

Marcel, my recommendation would be that if you want to go to the D8xx series then get the 800e or 810 to take advantage of the added sharpness with the low pass filter removed. For my money there's not a significant enough difference to justify getting the 800 as an "upgrade", particularly for thestyle of shots I've seen you post. Without the OLPF you'll get a nice boost on your landscape work, for sure, and everywhere else.

I guess I was just attracted by the savings. I'm sure I'd miss the quiet mode on either the 800 or 800E. The 810 would b ideal but it would cost me exactly double... Ah, the seller will get back to me on wednesday since he's on a field trip with his wife so I still have a few days to make up my mind, and then a change it, and then... :)

Not to sidetrack the thread, but. . . I've seen you comment about how much you like the 70-200/f4. I'm seriously considering it. I realize that the f/2.8 is faster, but us there any other reason why you are looking at the 70-200/2.8?

For a little bit more the new version of the Tamron 70-200/f2.8 is also a consideration. . .
