My D800E is now DEAD!

After dropping my D800E with a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 and Nikon SB 900, my lens and flash survived the impact but the camera's housing didn't. Nikon Service Center returned it to me and deemed it beyond repair. Externally, it looks fine buy I guess the inside didn't matter much.

I'm a little bit disappointed since I really like that camera. Might have to go for a more robust camera. My you rest in peace my old friend.:frown-new:

for now, I will be weighing some options. D4 or D3s? D800E, D610 or Df? Plenty of selections to choose from. If it is the D4 or D3s, I might have to get a used one since I don't want to shell out that much $$ for a camera.

For now, I'll just remain miserable and be contended with my D7000 since it is my back-up camera. :sulkiness:

There is no worse feeling than seeing a camera hit the floor.
1st one. Olympus OM2n 3 year old Son knocked over the tripod. Broke the motor winder in half
2nd one. Mamiya 645 Dropped in a waterfall (shallow water) No damage.
3rd one. Nikon D3100 Destroyed the case

Thom Hogan wrote an article about the growing numbers of photographers who had similar issue. Bottom line for D800 users, cradle your cameras.

Oh man, that totally sucks. Now you've got me feeling a little scared. Did you have any extra insurance on it? Is it completely toast and beyond repair or can you have it fixed cost effectively? I once took a nasty fall with my D7000 with the 14-24mm f/2.8 connected to it. The camera came out of it just fine but the lens eventually needed a new barrel a few months later.

Sorry to hear that Glenn! Hope you had insurance. If I were buying now it would be a D610. Otherwise I'm waiting to see what ends up between the D610 and the D800 which may be due for a refresh? Perhaps we should start some rumors to lift your spirits :)

I'm sooooo sorry my friend to hear what happened to your Nikon. The thought of it is enough to turn my stomach with the feeling of sinking depression. I hope somehow you'll be able to get it replaced soon. You have my best wishes Glenn.

Wow that's terrible!

After being accustomed to 36mp and no AA, do you think anything else will make you happy?

Hope you're able to find something.

Whenever you drop a camera or lens, and it seems OK, from then on you blame every anomaly you encounter on that component and always wonder.

Ouch! I sorta feel the pain but probably not like you're feeling. I was in my office importing photos onto my desktop when my wife strolled in. She grabbed my camera bag off the rocking chair and my 70-200 rolled out and hit the floor. The bag was still unzipped. Only thing wrong was a cracked hood. Still bothers me because in the back of my mind I think it'll never be the same. Let this be a lesson to you all. Get insurance. I insure about $20,000 worth of equipment and I don't think I pay over $400 per year. You never know.

Sorry to about this Glenn. :( Rent a D4 for a couple days.A more robust tough as nails body is the D3s. The D4 has more DR than the D3s otherwise pretty much the same.
I have a D800 also, lately I have been shooting the D4 more than the D800. I prefer the 16.2 files over the 36mps
