D800 back from Nikon

I recently sent the D800 in to Nikon because I could not AF fine tune my 70-200 / TC-20e combo as it was too far out of range. I got the body back today, although the lens and TC are following (long story). Apparently they have adjusted both the body and the lens combo. I now need to fine tune all my lenses again with the Reiken software. I don't mind doing that if the end result is good. I'll post an update on the lenses when they come back. They should be very good quality if the focus is spot on, given that live view focused perfectly and the images were impressive. Nikon has done the work free of charge, including the lens adjustment which I'm pleased about as it's just gone out of warranty :)

I just looked into the Reiken software since I hadn't seen it before. Interesting and thanks for mentioning it. Glad to hear it worked out well for your camera.

That's great news Geoff. That's a pretty complicated process to calibrate both camera and lenses but I'm sure you'll be a happy camper once you start nailing the focus.

I've spent the evening re-tuning my lenses to work on the calibrated body. Interestingly, my 50mm 1.8g is now at +18 from +2. My others have also moved in a + direction although not by as much. I'm just waiting for the lens and tele-convertor to get back to see if that works.

Can you post PDF files on the forum? I was thinking of posting a Reiken software report for anyone who hasn't seen them. It certainly makes the tuning process very easy and objective. I've seen some people say it's not consistent, but mine seems to be. You just need to light the target well.

Well I got the 70-200 and teleconvertor back today. When I put the lens on the body by itself the fine tune set by Nikon is now -9 rather than -17. That is good and fits with the 24-120 moving about 8 points positive after the body was adjusted

The lens plus teleconvertor is now set at -20 by Nikon. I reckon it's still fractionally back focussing as its slightly sharper when focused with live view CDAF. My wife thinks I'm mad as she can hardly tell the difference in compare mode in Lightroom, especially at less than 100% zoom. My response is that a £2000 lens and converter is either perfectly in focus or it's not right.

In reality the images are still pretty good for a lens with teleconvertor. I'm going to try it in actual use as I was not far from the subject in my test and I've learned over recent months that a lens that's perfect at 6 feet will not be at 100 feet, you have to choose where perfect is going to be set.

I'll post my findings when I've played some more, but I think I'm going to tell Nikon the case is not closed just yet.

My lenses changed a little too when my D800 came back from Nikon but I can't say any went as far as you 50mm. Most of mine range from +4 to -8 and several were spot on at zero.

Btw, I'd be interested in seeing the PDF, maybe you can email a copy to me when you get a chance. ([email protected])
