D80 - Memory Card

I decided that I needed more than 1 memory card - It's hard to find 4gig cards, so after reading several old posts, I found that the D80 could handle some of the higher capacity cards. I went with an 8gig card - same brand as the one that I know works. My problem is that the camera registers it as having 20 shots available. I can take 20 pictures and the counter still says that I have 20 shots available.

Has anyone else had this problem? I checked the OS version and I am at the current version... For those that are old enough to remember DOS - when hard drives came out, you could have a larger hard drive than DOS would recognize and it still would work, I am wondering if this is a similar problem, just on a camera platform.

Yes - that was the first thing I did. I took some pictures - was able to retrieve them, formatted in the camera again, took some pictures - was able to retrieve them. I then formatted it in the laptop - took some pictures and was able to retrieve them. I took over 40 pictures at one time, and the counter was never going below 20. At this point, based on my IT experience, I think the camera can see the card, but the os can only see up to a certain size. I could most likely keep on using the card, but I would never know how many shots I had left available to take. I am going to stick it in the camera bag for backup - just in case I need it one day.

Always format in the camera and never on the computer. It may work but it is designed to only be formated in the camera.
