Why waste space/resources on a built in flash? How many folks own and use an external flash instead of the dinky on-board flash? How many folks own external flashes that are more functional at a lower price point than Nikon's?

What I thought was interesting was that they went with SD cards instead of some combination of that XQD card...

It sounds like more of an update than an upgrade, but that is not a bad thing. I think the changes should help. The communication improvements will be a big deal if it works like it does on the Z platform. I think the focus system improvements and improvements in fps should be pretty nice. Should be a good update. I cannot imagine many missing the built in flash.

What would be the reason for not having a built-in flash?
The popup flash is a little used symbol of entry level cameras and if they intend the new model to be taken more seriously that can save the cost, problems and image of entry level cameras. Now that everyone has a pocket camera called a smartphone that has a weak but useable built in flash, there is no reason to duplicate that function. More photo oriented flash suited for a D780 level camera are now cheap, $50, that really work well and are far more flexible and capable. I have never heard anyone complain about D8x0 series cameras or Z6/7 cameras complain about lack of a popup flash. For one thing, popup flash lowers weather sealing quality and one of the concerns of many D750 owners.
