Clicking in live view (photo mode)

Hi all,

Just received my new Nikon D7500 yesterday and just tried out live view (for photo’s not video) and found a strange clicking noise when I adjusted focus. I have looked online and seen people saying this is normal and it’s the aperture opening/closing. When I adjust the aperture using the command dial it makes the same sound so sounds reasonable. However I have on a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro lens and with it being a non-variable aperture lens I wouldn’t expect it to be adjusting the aperture at all when focusing? In fact why would it be doing anything with the aperture when you are just focusing?

I’m not sure if this is a fault with the camera or just how it is, but if it is it seems wrong?

cheers

I can't answer the question about the clicking. If you purchased the body new, did you check the shutter count to make sure it was new?

As for the f/2.8 aperture on a macro lens - it won't always stay at f/2.8 even if that's what you have set on the body. It has to do with the distance and whether the subject is at 1:1 or further away. At 1:1 most likely the body will compensate automatically and stop down the aperture. As you get closer to infinity, then the aperture should be at f/2.8. Maybe this will help explain it:

Based on what I just wrote, try setting the aperture at f/8 for a macro shot then focus. See if the noise still happens.

I guess that could explain the clicking whilst focusing, but not sure if the clicking is normal expected behaviour for this camera. I’m hoping other users can let me know. The camera’s definitely brand new. Another strange thing is if I am in live view for video changing the focus doesn’t make a noise, but changing the aperture does, weird? Also the click is quite loud when changing the aperture surely this would be picked up by mic if filming, bad design in my view.

When you say you adjusted focus, do you mean you are using the Auto AF adjust feature? Or are you using autofocus in live view?

My D500 makes a springy noise when I change aperture in live view no matter what lens is on it. I posted a thread about it when I first got it and confirmed this is normal.

The noise from AF is the same in live view as with regular view. Just the motor turning the focuser and the sound of the lens hitting the stop at minimum and maximum turn. I don't hear the same noise as the aperture while focusing.

I don't use video, but I can confirm that I hear the same noise from the aperture change if I am set to video.
