Image area selection

The D7500 has the choice of image sizes, 24x16 is default with a choice of 18x12 (1.3) as the alternate. In what circumstances would you choose the latter?

That is an in camera crop. The same option is available on the D7200. I fooled with it a bit when shooting birds perched at a distance. I found no real benefit to using it. It was still a long distance photo that required cropping. At least post processing gives you some flexibility to adjust composition.

This sounds like the “digital zoom” on a point and shoot camera which goes beyond the “optical zoom” and the image can be degrade the further you go into digital. My A900 has this feature.

If you are shooting video, I think there are some modes only available in the 1.3 crop mode. Actually, I think the 4K video mode is only available in the crop mode.

No..It doesn't magnify the image... At least not in my D810... It simply just uses less of the sensor area... It reduces the file size, and hence the write time is a bit shorter...

Timelapse is the first thing that comes to mind. File size will be smaller. Another thing is when using the standard 24x16, the focus points stay mainly in the center. When using the 18x12, the focus points extend to the edges. I only use this feature if I feel like I need to put memory space in front of quality. If you are at an airshow and an hour in you've already used up half the memory card, pop it over to the smaller crop and more shots will fit on the card.
