D7500 from D5300

Just curious if someone has upgraded from D5X00 to the D7500 and what your thoughts are compared to the 5x00.

I just pulled the trigger after seeing adorama had the 7500(refurb) $130 more than the 7200(refurb), $679 vs $549. I've heard all the negativity between d7200 vs d7500, how its not a d500 and its more of a upgrade from the d5x00 (that applies to me). I have a D800 that has dual slots and a battery grip so I am not concerned about that with the DX body. What draws me to this camera over my 5300 is I have major anxiety with taking it out camping and God forbid, getting caught in bad weather. But I also desire a light(ish) camera to take with me to the mountains for snowboarding season. Water resistance was more important to me than lack of grip or second card. I also have several D lenses that work on the D800 but were manual focus only on the 5300. I'm 6'-5" and my meat hooks make the 5300 look tiny and feel a bit like a toy. I get good pics from it with the 18-140 but I leave it at home alot for fear of rain or dust and have been taking my d800 with me every day which might be asking for trouble due to oopses and bumps. My plan is to use the 800 for work and the 7500 for play. I cant wait to get it in my hands to see how it feels to me, but curious what the opinion is on this one since its been out a while now.

Check out the D7500 forum on Facebook too.
Those of us who have this camera are delighted with the amount of control and the Image Quality. Some, like me “upgraded” from the D7200, some from the D7200 and many, like you from D5xxx models.
There’s been comment about the single SD card, but honestly, most of us don’t miss the 2nd card slot and I’ve never lost an SD card....ever.

I recently got a B&H refurbished D7500. I have had a D5100 for a few years and wanted a more capable camera. Stepped up from a d40x; from a FM; from a Ftn. I'm happy with the D750p. Still learning. One card slot is enough for me. John

Just an FYI to people looking at getting good deals on refurbished gear, I got the D7500 from Adorama and love it! It showed up clean and looking brand new. Takes great, clean pictures but not all is included. They provided a charger and a European adapter, but the cord to connect the charger to the outlet was not included. For me- no worries because the D800 uses the same charger cord. Still- shouldnt they have mentioned that in the listing?

Hey hey, congrats on the step up! I'm really curious to hear your follow-up thoughts and comparison to the D5300 once you've had a few weeks of shooting under your belt. All the best with it!

And yes, I do indeed think Adorama should have disclosed that. Not everyone would have been merely minimally inconvenienced by that omission. I know I would have been stymied - and rather pissed - if that had been me.

Nikon hasn't been including charger cords for a while now even on new bodies. There should be a plug tip to put on the charger though. I have a printer cord that is the same and works fine since I prefer using the cord rather than the plug tip.

Enjoy your D7500. :)

No cord with my brand new D850 and don't eeeeeven get me started on the whole missing hot-shoe cover.

I'd gladly trade that nasty shoulder strap yesterday for a hot-shoe cover today, Nikon... DO YOU HEAR ME, NIKON??!! DOOOO YOUUU??!!

I definitely agree, Paul! Although I use the silicone Easy Cover on my bodies - so I don't need the hot-shoe cover. But for those who don't use the Easy Cover, the hot-shoe cover should be used. Long ago (35mm film days), Nikon didn't include them, but why risk getting dust, debris, and/or water in there?

I don't use their straps either.

I have one Nikon charger, and I don't remember which camera body it came with, that has no cord. Instead the plug connects to the charger and I plug the charger into the wall socket. Maybe that is how your's is meant to be used? It certainly is not as convenient to use as with a cord.

Man, do I feel dumb. The "European adapter" I briefly glanced at is not European at all! Under closer inspection, all is there, Adorama provided all I need (except the hot-shoe cover- but I stole the one off the D40x thats been banished to the drawer). My bad! Thanks for pointing it out there should be no cord @hark

I know I'm in the minority, but I use the original factory strap. :)

I think Nikon can afford the extra 10 cents a hot shoe cover would cost them to include it with all their DSLRs. Classic penny wise and pound foolish, IMO. And, no cord for the charger is just silly.

LOL. Not dumb at all. Nikon just saved 50 cents on your sale by not including a cord. THAT'S dumb. :)

Congrats on the 7500. I was down on it originally too. I have a 7200 and the missing card slot and grip as well as the absence of a drive motor were my biggest complaints. Than I bought a D700 and the single card slot worry left. Than I thought a bit more about how often I actually used the grip... Now I do like the drive for D lenses but I made a big jump to a Z6 and suddenly the drive motor is not as big a deal. So the D7500 is suppose to have a better sensor and a better focus system than the D7200. It also has snap bridge which is much better than the system on the D7200. So congrats.

When you decide to upgrade the D800 you should look at the Z6 or 7. But be warned... the Electronic View Finder will ruin you. My DSLRs see very little time in hand since the Z6 came home.

From what I remember, Nikon got those cords from one specific company. Then the company either stopped making them or went out of business. So instead of finding a new manufacturer, Nikon simply stopped including them. Makes me wonder just how good of a deal Nikon got from their cord manufacturer.

Believe me- the Z line has been on my radar quite a while. I wanted to get firmly deep into the DSLR arena before dipping my toes into mirrorless.
The info online about the D7500 was a bit confusing about the drive motor. It has one! What they did away with on the D7500 is the aperture dial meant for use with REALLY old lenses. My 35-70 2.8D, 80-200 2.8D and Tokina 100 2.8 all have drive motors and have all worked flawlessly on the D7500. Attached is a picture using the Tokina 100 2.8 that I took yesterday.

I did not know that. The way I read it the 7500 did not have the motor. Well that is great... Not that I am going to move back to DSLR, but it is good to know. Thanks.
