    File Naming

I try to name my files with some indicator of year.
Last year I prefixed my files with 019
    This year with 020.

I have surpassed the number of files it seems, so the same numbers are being re-used. I want to change the prefix again to 20B, so I can still see they are 2020. My camera will not let me change it. Is there something I am not doing? Is there some inbuilt thing that won't let me do this? ( I used this system on my D7100)

I am doing the same thing I did with my D7500 to change the name and from the manual it seems to be the way to do it, but the file name is not changing. On the menu screen, when I select file naming, it shows 20B but shots taken are still being named 020.

    Any suggestions?

When my D750 hit 9999 shutter actuations, I renamed the files to start with 10K. It saved the info and lists the file names correctly. It can be done with a D750, but I'm stumped as to why it wouldn't work for you.

Maybe @nickt or @FredKingston who are more tech savvy can give you some information.

I'm hoping it's not a case of the camera having a fault

Well, I just did the exact same thing again and it worked this time. This is about the 10th time I've tried to change the file name. Go figure

I can't remember if it was me or someone here on the forum, but they got themselves confused because there is a file naming menu for pictures and a separate one for videos under the movie menu. I checked all my cameras to be sure I added my file naming prefix to both photo and video menus.

I shall look at that also because I went out and took some pics and lo and behold.... all back to the old prefix. Damn this is frustrating

@Vixen How are you cataloguing your photos and what software are you using? I never worry about how Nikon names the images (admittedly their method, in a database universe, is childish and short-sighted) because the camera's memory card is simply a temporary storage until off-loaded to a catalogue system that corrects Nikon's method...

I use Lightroom's catalogue in a Year/month/day hierarchy subfolder system... and then further add descriptions to the Month/Day subfolders... i.e.

    \2020
    ...\Nov\23 Palm Beach Night shoot
    ...\Nov\24 Charlotte Portraits
    ...\Nov\26 Cooper swimming in Pool

The images are further Starred/Color Coded within those subfolders... Nikon's scheme becomes inconsequential once catalogued

I don't use Lightroom at all Fred. I tend to move my shots into folders relevant to the subject... so I have a specific road trip maybe or a car show or birds are in folders for the specific bird, same with flowers etc etc... but before I do that they are all just in a folder under the year. Its not the best method but can't think of any other way to do it that will suit me ATM. I try to attach keywords but I'm a bit lazy and tend to forget

Here we go again. I wish to rename files again to reflect 2021... shows file naming is 021 on the screen after I change it but files are continuing to be name 20A.. wonder how many times I'll have to do it before it sticks
