File Naming Conundrum

I have my file naming set to start file names with the year ie 020. I use 2 cards and because I remove them and copy from card to PC without going thru the camera they tend to get switched from slot 1 to slot 2 and vice versa continually. I am continually getting files named with last year file start ie 019. How do I stop this please?

Have no idea but are you saying the prefix changes. My d7100 come up with the same custom prefix that was programed but I rarely remove both cards. The camera is set to backup for second slot.

The prefix you save should not change. At least I can't think of a reason it should change. Are the 019's movies? Its a separate menu for movie file naming and maybe you forgot from last year?

No, not movies, photos. Its really got me stumped and its very annoying. The prefix is saved but every now and then it seems to revert to last years prefix ( I change it every year as close the the start of the year as I can ie when I remember to do it). It is a new camera but I got it before the New Year so had the prefix set as 019 and then changed it to 020 just after New Years. I've reformatted the cards to see if that stops it. Can't think what else to do to be honest

If formatting the cards doesn't help. You might try changing all three prefix locations to something different such as XXX, take a picture. After taking a picture set back to your normal prefix and see if that helps.

I've been watching and it did it again today. Its very random. I'll give your idea a go

Damn this is annoying. I renamed the file name to XXX and took a shot. It named the file with a 019. I reformatted the card, renamed the file prefix to 020. Took a shot and it named it 019 :confused::confused::confused:

OK... I think I know the reason. I have U1 & U2 set to my own custom settings. I was using my U2 settings today, so went thru and reselected all the settings and file naming again and the next pic I took had an 020 prefix. Yay!! (I hope :D )

One of the reasons I am not a fan of the U's for regular use. Too many sneaky little things have come back to haunt me. I keep a few 'just in case' settings in the U's and I don't use for any regular shooting.

I love them. I have one set for my backyard bird photography. I sit in the exact same spot in my garden every time & have worked out the best settings to use in that particular place, but have found the settings pretty close to what I need for macro also (both using flash) so instead of having to remember to change a heap of settings I only have to change the one, that being aperture.
Then I have one set for birding elsewhere. The system seems to work well for me so far :D

Stupid simple things though that frustrate. When I looked back through my shots it had been happening more that I'd noticed, so glad I fixed it. Now I have to remember that I probably have files of the same name in the archives :(
