I can't get the virtual horizon in the viewfinder after assigning it to Fn button

When I go into the custom menu, f2, and assign the Fn button with "virtual horizon," I get a simple leveling graphic at the bottom of the viewfinder, not the nifty virtual horizon image. I can activate the virtual horizon through the Set Up menu and see it working on the rear screen, but I can't get it to show up in the viewfinder while shooting still photos.

I think I've had the VH feature showing in the viewfinder before after much fiddling about, but I'll be darned if I can remember how I did it!

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or am I just imagining that I once had the full VH graphic in the viewfinder, rather than the little roll indicator?

This is the same on the d7100. Interested to what other setting my need to be enabled or if that's all there is to it. Can get it to show in Liveview by hitting the info button.

I think I'm probably just remembering wrong. The roll indicator is actually fine for the viewfinder as it's unobtrusive. Chances are, the times I would like the second axis reporting that the virtual horizon meter offers, it's likely the camera would be on a tripod, and I could activate the VH in the rear screen...

On my D750, the virtual horizon in live view is a yellow line which turns green when the camera is set right. In the view finder, when actuated by the fn button it is a vertical line at the bottom of the view finder window and shows shorter vertical bars on each side of the main line when the camera is out of level. No lines when it is level. That's all I have. Is that what you are remembering, @desmobob?

Apparently, what I was remembering was having the full-feature VH display in the viewfinder, and that's not an option. It is only available in Live View. That's fine.

It's just that when using the custom menu to assign another function to the Fn button, it shows the full-feature virtual horizon indicator icon vs. the simple roll sensor (arrow and bars) that you get in the viewfinder.

All is well... I've come to my senses. ;)

That's not the viewfinder...

I guess there's no way to do it. I was misled by the menu options showing an icon of the live view version of the indicator, not the simple one you get in the viewfinder.

I'm happy with the one I can get in the viewfinder, but it sure would be cool to have the other one!

Correct, not view finder but Liveview. This is the graphic you were thinking of? Wonder if it works in the VF of the Z series.
