Pulled the trigger on a D750

I couldn't resist the D750 after the price dropped to $999 yesterday. I have the D5200 and cannot wait to see the difference between the two.

I purchased the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm lens with it and already have the Tamron 35-150mm Di that I have been using on the D5200. I am thinking about the sister lens to the Tamron, the 17-35mm Di.

If anyone has any input into what else might match up with the D750 (lenses, accessories, etc.), I would appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Congratulations on getting a great camera! I never used a D5200 so am not sure about a direct comparison, but there is definitely a difference in sensors between my D7200 and D750. I assume your D5200 uses the menus for setting changes. The ability to use the buttons and wheels (command and sub-command dials) on the D750 is a big advantage.

Are you interested in macro? Some people use a Tamron 90mm while others use either the Sigma or Nikon 105mm. Any plans to try long exposures? If so, maybe consider getting a 9- or 10-stop neutral density filter. You'd need a tripod or some type of non-moving support for that.

What type of strap are you using? My suggestion is to ditch the one that comes with the camera. No need to advertise to hoodlums. Lol. There are so many accessories that come to mind - the most important for me are either a microfiber cleaning cloth or a Giottos rocket blower.

Have fun with it! :encouragement:

Yes I think it's a great price for a great camera.

What kind of photography are you doing?

All the lenses you have mentioned I believe are zooms. You might like a fast wide prime. There is the 50/1.8 and the 35/1.8 for example.

You might like a speedlight. The flash tube on my SB-600 finally failed after ~6 years. I replaced the speedlight with the Flashpoint R2 or also called the V860II I think. Adorama has it on sale now for just $120. I prefer Nikon's speedlights but the Flashpoint has been fine. And $120 for a full featured speedlight is another great deal.

Thanks for the help.

I preordered a Cotton Carrier strap setup that should be coming in January. Looks interesting.

I've been interested in macro and have taken a few pics with the new camera and lens yesterday that are not quite macro in perspective. You've tempted me into thinking about a macro lens :)

Congrats and welcome! A very nice upgrade from your D5200.

Reviewing your signature, it appears you need to pickup some FX glass. What's the lens budget? Certainly check out the 50mm f1.8G for sure, a great value prime lens for sure.

I took your advice and asked Santa fo the Nikon 50mm 1.8G :)

I am going to save up for the Tamron 17-35mm Di and either the Tamron 90mm or the Nikon 105mm. I haven't done enough research on either one yet to decide.

Thanks!

Get the older 105 "D" AF version for about $150 nobody really uses them (macro mode) in AF and VR is not worth the huge upcharge

don't need the $600 new ones.

People laugh at me, but the best budget lens for the D750 is the old Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6. It is fragile plastic but costs less than half what the 50 f/1.8 does. And at f/5.6 or 8 pictures are sharp, you cannot tell the what prime it is replacing. But we don't bang up our lenses anyway do we?

You do give up the ability to blur the backgrounds like you can with f/2's

Thanks for all the input everyone!

Anyone have any experience with the Sigma 105mm DG macro lens?

Jake (BackdoorHippie) has a Sigma 105mm lens with the OS (their version of vibration reduction). His macro images with it are stellar.

Whlie the 28-80mm is a good lens in itself, it is an entirely different lens than the 50mm prime and one shouldn't really be considered a replacement for the other. at $200 new, the 50mm is one of the best values out there.

Agreed, I have two of them. But folks on a budget, who have none of the 3 popular full frame primes ought to consider it. Especially since the D750 is excellent up to 3200 iso.

Cost, used of course, is $50 tops.

That's a good idea!

I'm guessing listing them on ebay and here are the best places.

Thanks!
I'd try selling them locally on facebook first - This skips the fees and potential returns.

If no luck there, ebay is the best second option to maximize what you would get.

If you are not comfortable with those options, selling to a site like KEH is painless, however you will net much less.

Ebay and anyone who takes Paypal is very risky for sellers these days.

Buyer has the ability to make any bogus claim, up to 6 months after the sale and seller always loses.

I've done hundreds of deals on ebay over the years and recently had a couple crooked buyers ding me. So no more for me.

Recently I sold a batch of photo items on Fredmiranda.com at a very low price (still lots more than KEH offered) and after a couple months the buyer had me cough up a partial refund upon threat of a paypal deal un-do.

Some of the guys on FM are in the used gear business. I'll never sell to anyone on there with more than +50 'excellent' reviews. People doing that much business are either nuts, or in the business. Especially when the user-name has never posted anything, ever in the FM discussion forums. FM has terrific historical search of forums and buy-sell going back years.

Other than that caution, FM is the best option (costs $15 per month to list for sale items). I'm also very happy with the dozen or so purchases I've made on FM.

So I took everyone’s advice into consideration and traded in my DX lenses yesterday at Unique Photo’s weekend expo.

I got the same trade in values as from KEH, pulled the trigger on the Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Macro, got store credit for the sales tax (which went towards a B+W filter) and an $80 mail-in rebate from Tamron and Unique.

I am very happy with the purchase and also had a blast at Unique’s expo. I’m definitely going back again next year.
