D750 making noise in live mode

Hello,

I am a relative noob to DSLRs and just got a D750. When the camera is in live mode is making a loud sound that is caught by the internal microphone whenever I shoot video. I would describe the sound as though it sounds like a processor. I have searched the internet and found a post on reddit that says the sound is "normal" which I am having a hard time believing since I just can't believe that Nikon would release a camera that ruins video (see reddit link below). So I called Nikon and they said the sound is caused by the fact that I have a VR lens (I have a NIKKOR 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G) and that if I got a new lens, the sound would go away. So my question is this in fact true and if so, what lens should I get?

Thanks All

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

The biggest issue you have is the 18-200mm lens is a DX lens and the D750 if an FX camera body. The noise might indeed be normal for this lens on this camera and a new FX lens might well be your solution.

The noise is caused by the focus motor being activated... It gets activated anytime the focus changes. It doesn't matter which lens you use, you'll hear it whenever the focus changes automatically... The camera's audio port's proximity to the camera is also a problem. Any noise the camera makes will be recorded. Over-all... not much you can do except to not use any auto focus modes while doing video... and/or buying an external audio recorder and merging audio and video in post production. Or buying an external microphone with a longish cable to get the mic away from the camera...

That worked Mike! Thank you so much. This means we can use this lens that we bought second hand. Again, thanks so much! Now I just need to understand what VR is! LOL

VR = Vibration Reduction... It's a method of focus stabilization which replicates about 2-5 stops of exposure by jiggling lens elements to compensate for handheld motion... Allows you to shoot in low light situations whereby you'd normally need to increase speed using the camera handheld. It's recommended to you turn it OFF when using a tripod.

In your case... it runs the focus motor in the lens creating a slight whirring/clicking/motor sound that gets picked up by the close proximity of the builtin microphone when shooting video.

Some lenses tend to make more noise than others in this mode... hence the suggestion to try different lenses and/or turning OFF VR...
