Storage selection: use card #1, overflow to card #2

This is how I have my D750 set. I have a Sandisk 32GB Extreme Pro SD in slot #1 and a Samsung Evo 32GB micro-SD in its SD adapter in slot #2. My LCD display showed that I had space available for over 500 RAW + JPEG Fine images.

Today, I shot 34 images. When I used Nikon Transfer to download them, it downloaded 33 and then gave me a notification that one image was remaining on the other card. I downloaded it with no trouble and it was one of the images I took today.

I'm curious as to how that single image ended up on card #2. I did not change my storage settings while shooting and the camera is still set to my selection to use card #1 first and then card #2 for overflow.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I have not encountered the issue you had occur. I have my #1 card set up for RAW and my #2 for Fine JPEG and both of mine are Sandisk 64GB Extreme Pro SD cards.
It sounds like something caused a malfunction. You mentioned that both cards are the same size but are the also same speed? Is this the first time you have used the
current combination? Had both cards been formatted in camera?

Both cards were formatted in the camera. The speed maybe different. The Samsung is so small I can't read it without a loupe. It may be slower, but because I thought it might be, I chose to put it in the card #2 position where it was likely to never be used.

I think the fact that I'm using two different brands/models of cards is probably not the best situation. My previous and current other digital camera (had a D70; have a D200) uses CF cards. i had to scrounge around the house to find an SD card to put in the second slot when I got the D750, hence the Samsung micro-SD and adapter.

That one little glitch doesn't seem to serious. I didn't lose any data or run out of storage so it didn't panic me. I haven't had the D750 for long and the most NEF+JPEG Fine shots I've taken on one outing was 73. They all were stored on card #1 as expected. That's why I was a little surprised that one shot of just 34 somehow got sent to the other card this time.

I'll order a couple more of the Sandisk Extreme Pro cards for the camera and keep a careful eye on things going forward.

I guess that's possible, but it hasn't been touched since I put it in there when I set up the camera out of the box. (I use the USB cord to download images to my notebook.) But I did take it out before I started this thread so I could be sure of what cards I had in there. I'm going to double-check and be sure both cards are clean, there is no dust or lint in the card slots, and that the cards are seated fully!

I once had intermittent trouble with a micro card in an SD size adapter and won't do that.

The micro card with adapter use is just asking for trouble. SD cards are cheap, get yourself a few of them and you shouldn't have problems. I've read about micro sd cards are sometimes fakes copies and could be problematic.

I think I've found that my original "problem" was imagined. I used to use the Image Capture program on my Mac to download photos from the cameras. I had recently switched to using Nikon Transfer 2. After using it several more times, I find that after downloading images from card #1, it always asks if I want to download card #2 (which has always been empty).

In any case, I ordered another SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card to replace the micro-SD card and adapter I had in slot #2. I also remembered I have another good SD card in my recently-deceased Lumix T5. I know most folks have loads of SD cards on hand, but with the the huge photo capacity they have, I've never had a need for more than the one in slot #1! I guess I better get out of my old film habits and hit and hold that shutter button more often!

I'm glad to hear that you solved the issue Bob...just look at this way, now you will have an new speedy card which will provide you plenty of space for all those new
shots just waiting to be taken

Nothing wrong with being deliberate with the shots you take. But digital does give you the freedom to take a few extra at minimal cost. Maybe change the angle or framing or just some experimentation but you do have to invest the time going through them.
