Live View still and video really does need AF-S lenses for auto-focus to function?

I've had my D750 for a month or so and have only experimented once or twice with Live View still photography; I played around with a couple of still life photos with the Selective Color feature using the old AF 50mm f/1.8 I've had for years. Autofocus was slow, but seemed to work OK. I don't remember what my autofocus setting was.

I recently shot an evening Christmas parade featuring lighted tractors. When I attempted a ground-level wide angle shot using live view, I couldn't get autofocus (AF-C 3D). I tried again outside on an overcast day and still couldn't get the camera to focus. Reviewing the manual, I read that the Live View autofocus will only be effective with AF-S lenses.

Is this true, or do I need to change my AF setting to have success with my older, non-AF-S lenses? I'll experiment more when I get an opportunity.

Stay sharp,
Bob

You don't use AF-C ontinuous mode for what you want. While holding the focus mode button IN while in Live View, rotate the front-command dial on the camera until AF-F appears in the menu portion of the Live View screen
