Dear all.

I live in Argentina and here photography stuff is pretty expensive. Going to NY for vacation is a good opportunity to buy new material at a lesser price.

My photography experience is going pretty well and I'm having my first customers mainly for studio sessions and events. The feedbacks received from them are positive so I'll work hard to get better every time to be hopefully, one day, a full time photographer.

I have a D750 and 35 / 50 / 85 1.8 + 24 2.8 and a D3300. For events I use mainly D750 with 35 and shifting to 24 or 85 when necessary and keep the 50 on the D3300 for some closer shots / candids but I don't really use much the D3300 though.

I was initially thinking to buy a refurbished D610 (1000 USD) to pair with D750 and use the 35 / 85 combo or to buy a used 24-70 tamron and keep the D3300 as back up.

I finally decided to buy none of them (just en extra TTL flash and a foldable beauty dish) and keep working with what a have.

I don't have really so many events to justify so much money spent and for studio work I don't need anything else.

I have various studio works planned (practice) but just an event (wedding) scheduled at the end of August and it will be a civil ceremony in a small room (35mm will work perfectly) formals in a park (85) and a reception in a resto (again 35 or 50).

If necessary I could rent a Sigma 24-70 or 70-200 for 500 Argentinean pesos (a McDonald meal is around 130 to put in perspective, 1 Liter of milk around 20).

I have 2 YN TTL flashes for events and various others lightings and modifiers.

Do you think I took the right decision or could invest in more equipments?

I plan to travel to Japan with my daughter in 2018/2019 and those 1000 USD will be useful.

I'd love to hear your opinion.

BTW I'll be in USA (Pitt) for other 5 days.

Chau!

Rather than buying The 24-70 lens, which pretty well duplicates the range you have covered with your primes, I would have looked at a used 70-200 or 80-200 lens to gain some added telephoto capability. Another option since you have the DX D3300 would be a used super zoom (18-140, 18-200, 18-300) to really give you some flexibility above 85mm. These lenses my not have the IQ of your primes, if you look at samples here and elsewhere, they will give you some really nice photographs

Thank you Bikerbrent. I'd love a 80-200 because I enjoy theaters and dance photography but in socials I have not need that reach yet. Using the 85 in the d3300 I'll have a field/angle of view similar to a 127 in FX that is not that bad either. Another possibility that I was considering was a Sigma 17-50 2.8 for d3300. It not that expensive, pretty good IQ and absolutely easy to resell here in Argentina. When I'll use 35 on D750 I'll have good flexibility in the D3300, comparable to 26 - 70 in fx. Anyway I don't feel it that necessary.

For events, are the prime lenses and dual bodies working out for you?

That has been my biggest motivator for the 24-70/2.8, having the flexibility to zoom with the lens when I can't zoom with my feet and cover most of those prime lens focal lengths (missing 85mm of course). The 17-50/2.8 is a nice alternative and saves some money over the 24-70, but then it keeps you on your D3300 and not shooting the D750. For events, I want to stay on my FX body as much as possible.

Hi Cowboy! Hi love primes but I feel that a zoom could be more practical for different reasons:1) Indoor I tend to keep the flash mounted. Two bodies and two flashes are really bulky. 2) During the key moments you wish to have a wide and a close view. Or you shoot with two cameras at the same time or you end up cropping a lot. I don't have the skills to shoot two cameras at the same time for now. 3) the are a lot of situations where two cameras are too much, like informal works or when you hang around for pleasure or when you want to be a bit stealthy 4) when you cannot zoom with your feet (theaters, photoperiodism) and anyway when you don't want a close portrait in 35mm... I mean even using the 35 right, I would not go too close with it. 5) when you don't need much f/1.8

I feel that zoom is the best way to be practical while primes, when you really know how to use it can, can give you more artistic results and push you more towards creativity

I agree with all your reasoning above on what the zoom benefits you with. My only disagreement was with the Sigma 17-50 and it being a DX lens ... I would rather have those benefits on your D750 vs the D3300. ;) But when money is a barrier, we do what we gotta do to get the shot. :)

Thank for your suggestions. Sometimes it's better to wait and buy what you really need.
