D750 Shutter Error Message

During the past week, I was out a couple of times to take photos. I haven't taken many outdoors lately because I've spent a lot of time over the past year working on a church calendar.

Sunday afternoon I decided to just do it. Had a beautiful image in my viewfinder with the sun's ray coming down on the river so I clicked the shutter button. I heard the mirror go up then everything went silent. Huh? I looked through the viewfinder and everything was black. Of course I'm a goober so I turned it around to make sure the lens cap wasn't on! :loyal: Yes, I actually did. The top display said ERR. Uh-oh!

Pressing the shutter button didn't clear it so I turned the camera on, turned it off, turned it on, turned it off. Nope. Nope. Nope. NOPE! Nothing worked. There was still an err message on the top. *sigh*

Next I looked everything over. Wait! What?!! The VR was on even though I hadn't turned it on. Hmm.... While the camera was off, I flipped off the VR switch then turned the camera back on. CLINK! The mirror dropped back down and all was well.

Obviously I forgot to turn off the VR when I last used this lens even though I always try to make sure it is off. I never turn the camera off immediately after taking a photo so even if I had left the VR on, it shouldn't have been engaged when the body was turned off. So...just a heads-up to those of you who leave your VR on. Once the problem was fixed, the camera/lens performed flawlessly. And I only have 2552 shutter actuations on this body. In the past I've forgotten to turn off the VR only a couple of times before turning off the body...and this might have been the first time with this body, but it's never posed a problem in the past any of the other times I've forgotten. So just beware and know leaving the VR on can cause problems.

Thanks for that. Well there you go! I just learnt something new. I have a couple of Tamron lenses and I never knew I was meant to turn the VR off when I turn off my camera.

I've always left on my VR unless using a tripod!

You're welcome. The lens was still mounted on the body from the last time I used it so it didn't happen from mounting the lens while the VR was on. If I had turned off the body while the VR was still on, I could understand this happening. The time before, I loaded the photos on my computer then went into the camera to reformat the card. So the shutter wasn't pressed immediately before the camera was turned off. I know that for sure.

I also leave VR on all the time with no issues (knock wood!). In fact, the instructions for my Sigma 150-600mm lens state I should turn off VR before dismounting the lens. However, after 10 years of leaving my Nikon 18-200mm VR on all the time, I am having one heck of a time remembering to turn the Sigma VR on or off.

I'm pleased that you got the camera sorted out, Cindy, but did you manage to get the shot?!

WM

Yes, I did but the editing that it requires is beyond my abilities at this time. Here is a screen shot of the original, unedited NEF.

Screen Shot of NEF.jpg

So I sent the original NEF to someone who is far more knowledgeable asking how to enhance the sunbeams because all I could find through Google is how to create sunbeams. This is a screen shot of a quick edit the person did, and as you can see, several things were done to bring it to this point. And there are probably other things I'd do, but I only asked about enhancing the sunbeams. I am not good with layer masks, grouping, or smart objects and still have a lot to learn in Photoshop.

And here is a Dropbox link to the original NEF for those who wish to play around with it.

Not sure what sort of look you're going for but I had a few minutes to play around...

Nice, Paul. I'm just looking to make the rays appear more visible especially in the darker clouds that are below the bright clouds. In the area above the trees, the rays aren't too visible in the original photo.

I am curious to see what you come up with. Enhancing those sunbeams is more difficult than I imagined. I'm not so concerned about changing the color of the sky. That I know how to do. Looking specifically to see how people make the rays stand out more.

Hey Cindy! This is what I came up with after fiddling around with it a while. I dropped the exposure on the whole sky, then I used the brush in LR to bring up the exposure, clarity only on the light beams.
I did some other adjustments on the whole shot, but the selective brush in LR is what I used to enhance your light beans, which is what you're after.

Edit, to add. This is just me, but I would have taken a shot like this in landscape mode with a wide angle lens, and would have bracketed it..

Thanks for this, Pete! I was afraid if I used a wider lens, I would have picked up extraneous stuff. Land is immediately off to the right which looked very desolate, and it was only this section of the sky that looked awesome. However, when I go back, I'll try a horizontal, wider shot just to see how the view looks overall. ;)

Today I took a variety of photos during this morning's Worship service. At one point, I took several photos in succession although not continuous--meaning there was a split second between each image (and I refocused prior to each one) taking a total of 3 images. All of a sudden when I tried to take a 4th image, the camera would no longer focus. That's when I noticed something flashing. On the top display it said CARD ERR. After waiting several seconds, it finally cleared off and had no further trouble. I always reformat my cards in camera after the images are loaded onto my computer.

Once again I experienced the shutter ERR message. When I started this thread, initially I thought it happened because of leaving the VR on. It happened again today--first shot of the day just like when it happened previously, but my VR wasn't left on accidentally like before.

I used the camera a few nights ago, loaded all the images onto my computer, and reformatted the cards in camera. Today I mounted my Nikon 105 VR lens while the camera was OFF and made sure the VR was also turned off BEFORE mounting it. I turned the camera on, set some trial settings, and pressed the shutter. The camera took the image but locked the mirror up once again. The viewfinder was black. Toggling the VR switch on/off didn't do anything so I turned the camera off then on again. When I pressed the shutter, the mirror came down. When this happened the first time, turning the camera off then on then pressing the shutter didn't resolve the problem like it did this time. Both times this happened, I only experienced it with the very first shot I took.

Not sure if this is related to the problem @Blacktop is experiencing with his D750. My shutter count is only 2962. I rarely use Live View, Quite Mode, or MUP, and certainly wasn't this time (and haven't for quite a while). Here is an unedited jpeg that was only resized for the forum. My 2nd slot is jpeg which is where this comes from. This will allow you to see the EXIF data. I've never installed any camera firmware either. Any suggestions to try?

EDIT: And I was in Aperture Priority both times this happened.

This problem sounds like the one I had the first time, when I send it in for repairs.

After having really bad service during my D600 problem, I don't want to send it in unless the problem becomes constant. Thanks for letting me know. *sigh* :(

@Blacktop can you please explain a little more about your first repair? I thought you had a shutter problem with it, or am I mistaken? This is definitely a mirror problem as the shutter takes the photo and closes but the mirror doesn't flip back into its original position.

Sorry. The problem was shutter related, it's just the way that it was acting is similar. Would have to press the shutter twice to get it unstuck, or even turn the camera off. After a while the shutter just fell apart.
Hope you get yours sorted out.I'm sending mine back Saturday for this new thing.
