Just bought this:

SANDISK Extreme Pro 95MB/s SDXC UHS1 U3 633X Flash Memory Card 128GB

Should the other card, which I use as backup, be identical?

If your card in slot A is larger, and you are using B for backup, you will only fill A up to whatever the size of B is. Speed only really matters if you need the speed. I ran two 32gig version of those cards in my D7100 to get as much buffer performance as i could.

What happens if

A) You have only ONE card
B) You have a 64GB card as backup

Do I need two?

I use two. I got a deal on two 64gig cards so both mine are the same, but if I wanted one simply as back-up and I did not intend to clear it off at the same time as I clear card 1 I would put the bigger card in slot 2.

The way I do it is I put raw only on card 1 and raw + jpeg on 2. I use the second card as back up and I tend to clear them both at the same time.

It is nice having two cards in the camera. More than once I have forgotten card one in my laptop after downloading some photos and having that second card saved me.

For A, that will be the card that the files are written to. No backups or anything

For B, if card A is larger, A will only fill up to the capacity of B. If A is smaller, then it will fill up and B will be filled to A's capacity.
