Nikon D750 Lens (Starter)

Hi all,

I'm in need of a little help in choosing a lens or two for the D750.

I'm coming from a Canon 550d, which my Sigma lens 18-200mm lens broke and I fancy a change to Nikon.

I take mostly city shots. side-walks (portraits) and a bit of nature. I also take a lot of video footage.

I ideally want a good versatile everyday lens as well as a zoom.

I'm looking at picking up this bundle:
Nikon D750 24.3 MP Digital SLR Camera (Black) with AF-S 24-85mm VR lens - SlrHut.co.uk

Which I believe comes with the Nikon: AF-S NIKKOR 24–85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR
AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

Would this be a good lens? Also what zoom would you choose without breaking the bank?

I had my eye on
AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED from Nikon
But its a crazy price.

Hope you can help.

Welcome !

That is a great kit. The 24-85 FX kit lens is outstanding and a most excellent walk around!

Very little you can't do with that bundle! You could add a budget friendly Nikkor 70-300 AF-S VR and be on your way. Upgrade high end down the road if need be.

edit Don't overlook Nikon D Glass!

I'd have a look at the 24-120mm kit. It's a great lens at the price you can have it for when bought with the D750.

I ended up wanting a slightly faster lens so I swapped it out for the Tamron 24-70, another option you should definitely look at.

For your street stuff I think a 35mm 1.8 would be a good option.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

All the help is really appreciated!

Its a big expense to me and I want to make sure I'm going in the right direction and upgrading from the 550d.

What benefit would I get if I went for the 24-120mm? Would I lose any sharpness/quality?

Are you refering to the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G when you mention 35mm? As its a DX lens? What would this bring that's different to the 24-85mm FX or 24-120mm FX?

i'll see if I can pick up the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED on eBay second hand to save a few £, but I know it'll be useful to have.

Thanks again

You get a slightly longer focal range which just means it can be slightly more useful in more scenarios that might demand a few more mm on the telephoto end. The 24-120 is a sharp lens that is built like a tank. It's a good lens.

As for the 35mm, yes the 1.8G lens is the one I was referring too.

Are you referring to the (FX) 35mm f1.8G ED I assume?

@Nutpuk my son, an experienced photog, bought the D610 2 lens kit from NikonUSA a few months back. He assumed that he would dial the kit in and then sell the 24-85 VR and the 70-300 VR and upgrade quickly to either the F4 or F2.8 trilogy or a combination of the two.

He continues the rave regarding the FX kit glass and has decided he will add a few primes instead. Has already grabbed a 50 F 1.4 D.

I still suggest the 24-85 is a winner as a starter kit. I think you will be blown away with the D750 performance and stunned at the images the Nikon FX kit glass produce especially with the VR and the ISO capabilities of the camera. They produce great results on the D610 I can only assume the D750 will enhance the experience.

That's my last say, good luck and let us know how you make out!

When I bought my D750 early this year, I tempted to buy the kit lens 24-120 at bundle price but I decided not to. The main reason was that the reviews on that lens were mixed. I bought 50mm f/1.8G for $200 instead, just to have something to shoot with while waiting for special sales of the lenses I wanted. Not long after I bought 70-200 f/4 and 16-35 f/4 at very good prices. I like both of them but I use the 70-200 more often. I think I still need a light but good walk-around lens which can be used as a travel lens. I'm still waiting... patience is a virtue LOL.

good think you didnt see the new 24-70 2.8 VR version announced. thats just a bit more at $2400. you might consider the sigma 24-105 F/4 ART lens. will outperform that 24-85 in IQ without winking.

It should for the price. You can pick up a refurbed 24-85 for under $400, less than half the price of the Siggy. I bought the 24-85 with my D600 and have been tempted to swap it out for the 24-120. Every time I get the itch, I remember that I wanted a small walkaround lens (it's an inch shorter than the 24-120 and weighs about 10 ounces less. And though it's not a fixed aperture, 4.5 is not bad at the long end (vs a constant f/4). IQ is not bad either compared to my 24-70.

Looking at your sig @singlerosa I love, love your kit! Can't see what the 24-120 would do for you, rock solid kit Nikon FX glass for knock around duty and killer F 2.8 glass for serious work. Color me impressed! All your cams have the same layout too! Well played indeed!
