D750 Autofocus problem with 28-70

Hey!

First time poster:

So I recently bought a D750 and it's been a great camera! I sent in my D700 and my 28-70D 2.8 into Nikon for a service repair. D700 needed to be cleaned, and needed the rubber replaced. 28-70 wasn't autofocusing on my D750, but was working with my D700 perfectly.

So I just got it back from Nikon and the same problem occurred. My 28-70 is still autofocusing sporadically with my D750, but works fine with the D700. I put it on, nothing. Take it off and put it on, nothing. Do it again, it'll work for a minute and then not work again. It's very frustrating. NikonUSA fixed a motor that was inside along with the AF/M switch. This is getting ridiculous as that's my go-to lens and I cannot keep affording to rent glass. The 24-70G I rented works fine on both bodies.

Does someone know about this issue?

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens? Use a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol and lightly rub all the pins and contacts, being careful, of course, not to get any on the glass! :) See what that does for ya. :) Let us know if you've resolved the problem already.

Just a thought; could it be a faulty lens? Is it new? Used? Was it ever damaged in any way?

What about the contact points on the camera mounting surface? Are they spotless clean? Any kind of residue or "film" on those contacts?

I have had this EXACT same issue. I am on my 2nd D750 body and am convinced this is a known issue that Nikon has yet to communicate publicly. I ONLY have this issue w/ my Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S D lens, my 80-200 f/2.8 works like a charm every time.

Here is what I have noticed thus far. When the issue occurs i can hear a very faint ticking sound coming from the mount where the lens connects to the camera. I can usually just push in the lens release button w/out turning the lens to get the autofocus to work again. Occasionally I have to slightly disconnect and reconnect the lens for it to start working again. My 28-70 contacts are in excellent shape and I have cleaned them numerous times (almost OCD about them). This lens has worked flawlessly on a D40x, D90, D700, D800, D2x. The ONLY camera I have ever had an issue w/ is my D750.

I am taking both the camera and the lens to Midwest Camera Repair tomorrow to have them take a look vs. send everything into Nikon & be without my equipment for 6 weeks and be charged likely for an unnecessary repair.

I have been in contact w/ at least 3 other people dealing w/ this same issue w/ this same lens and camera combo. Hoping Nikon acknowledges this soon!!! I'll keep you posted on what i find out from MWCR tomorrow!

I'd tell you to return the Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 D if you can, sell it if you can't, and put that money toward a Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD instead.

I would caution against using rubbing alcohol as it is 30% water. I would instead suggest using lens cleaning solution or denatured alcohol.

Hi Nick,

my son already bought me a D750 + a used 28-70 f2.8D IF ED AF-S (Manufactured around early-mid 2002 [estimated]).

But I shall only have them in hands in January 2016, when he is coming back from overseas. Thank you to advise me (1) if your issue with that same lens and body models had been solved and (2) was it your lens that had a problem or was defective or (3) is it an “un-compatibility” of this specific lens with the D750.

Thanks beforehand for your reply. Regards. Yannick

I have a similar problem with my d750 and the 28-70mm 2.8. I found this happened when using focus mode AFS and centre spot. What happens is the camera stops focussing and it's almost as though it won't fire. I also notice the focus point moves from the centre to the focus point directly to the left of centre. I find switching from AFS to AFC shoot and go back cures it.

im now on my second d750 which was sent back for the same problem. I called Nikon and they are not aware of any issues. I am more concerned that the focus spot can move despite being locked on the dial.

i should also add this lens works without issues on my D600, the d750 will lock up every 200 approx shots...

Exactly the same issue here, slight clicking noise, how do I get this ficed without paying them for a 24 - 70, it has absolutely no issues on my d610, feels like I'm paying twice for upgrading to the d750..

Hi Jordan,

Very detail description, I have a 28-70 which work perfectly on D2X. When I got my D750, the auto focusing works periodically and tiny ticking sound is coming from thr mount or motor.

How did you go with local repairer? I am planning to bring it to a repairer down in Melbourne CBD and hope you can share more light on this, thx.

I had a similar issue with my Nikkor AF-S 80-200mm F2.8 D ED IF were it would not AF on my new D750 body it works on all other camera bodies I had the local camera shop tested it on their cameras my 80-200 worked fine only on the D750's it had a problem.

My Nikkor AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D worked fine as did all my other lens several.

Sent in both body and 80-200 in to Nikon Service and they found that it needed to be re-chipped it did cost me $345 but works great after that great lens on my D750.

Can't believe we are now in late 2017 and I'm having a problem with the autofocus on my d750 put 24-70 doesn't work take it off attached my 70-200 no autofocus ten reattach my 24-70 and Bingo starts to focus take it off reattach again no focus.

Just sent it off to Nikon this morning hoping it gets sorted.
