Rate photos in camera?

So I’ve have started shooting professional ECHL hockey for a website. I’m shooting 500-700 photos a game. Which I then have the turnout and post that same night to website.

Is there a way to rate or star photos in camera so that when I cull after the game it’s easy to see those and double check quality on computer. Or is my only option to cull after each period or use 3 separate memory cards?

Only way I know would to be to geek each photo, and if it isn't a star, delete it immediately... That would leave just starred images on the card...

Maybe write down the number on a small pad. Of course the file names won't directly correspond, unless you reset the file name counter before each shoot.

Sometimes old school ways are the easiest. Of course old school photography didn't give you an instant look at your picture, unless you were taking Polaroids.

Review the picture after taking it. If it looks like a “star” then immediately take a picture of the back of your hand, or the inside of the lens cover, or anything else that works for you. Then, during post processing, any picture immediately before a picture of your hand or lens cap, etc, will be worth looking at closer. Heck, you could even draw a star on a sheet of paper and use that!

If you only want to review a few files, you could use the image protection button on just those images as a way to mark them. Or you can do a quick review and mark the first and last images in a series you know you want to keep. Not sure if there is a way to look at just the files that are protected in case you want to mark just the questionable ones. Are you using some type of software like that might show which images have image protection?

Using PhotoMechanic to cull. I don’t think it shows image protection, but I’m not positive on that.

Image protection is the only thing I can think of that would mark an image in-camera.
I have been culling thousands of garbage files off of my computer. It isn't fun. I have been tagging the garbage with a red tag and then arranging by tags, that way I can move all the ones I don't want into the trash in one swoop. Questionable images get tagged with a yellow dot. That way I can go back and just look at those later. It is tedious.

Maybe I should learn to take better images.
