Battery Drain While Off?

Hey, all. New member, but I've been shooting Nikon for a while. I just went from a D3400 to a D7200, and I've noticed the battery drains fairly quickly while the camera is in the off position. I went to bed with it at 98%, and it was in the 70s when I woke up in the morning. It seems to drain at acceptable levels while on.

So, is there a setting or something I'm missing? Is this normal with a new battery? Thanks for the info.

I have a 7100 that I leave on all the time, very little battery drain unless in use. Check your "battery info" for charge and age.

Check the viewfinder to make sure its really off as well as the top lcd. Top lcd should just show your remaining shots and memory card when off. Speaking of memory, I have seen cameras keep busy trying to 'finish up' with the memory card after power down. The little activity led on the back was flashing though. You should not see a drain overnight. I've left the camera on for unknown days not run the battery down. You could try leaving the camera with no lens or memory cards and see if it still drains. You could try leaving a fully charged battery out for a few days and see if it looks run down when put back in the camera. And like nikonpup says, check your battery screen. Mine all say 0 (new), even my battery that came from my d7100. Not sure how it evaluates the battery.

Some say a new battery needs to cycle a few times to be at its best. Yeh, it does, but in 4 Nikons I don't recall ever being alarmed by a battery running down by itself. I would say use it a few cycles and keep an eye on it. Don't settle for it though if it continues. If it does continue and if this is a brand new camera, I think I would try for a return with your dealer rather than mess with warranty.

I've tried 3 different batteries, and tried the battery grip on it today. All batteries that I've used are brand new, age 0. I had it set to prioritize the grip over the internal battery. The grip stayed at 100%, internal battery drained steadily. Its 8-9% per hour on the internal battery. I just took the lens off, removed the memory cards, and put a fresh, 100% charged battery in it. Drained 1% in under 10 minutes. That's not natural. I called the seller, and I'll be returning it for a refund. Looks like there's a problem with the camera itself. I'll pick up another one at some point soon, though. I really like the camera, other than this particular issue.

I'll bet its the grip probably a 3rd party one :D

I think you missed my original point. The internal battery (with no grip attached) drains very quickly. It drops 2-3% in under 10 minutes. I did have a full battery charge last 8-9 hours before it was completely drained, with extremely light usage. Can anyone confirm that this is normal before I send it back? If I turn the camera off, with the battery at 98% charge, is it out of the ordinary to wake up 8 hours later with 70%? My D3400 goes for days and days on a battery, taking pics AND on stand-by. I thought there might be a setting or something I've missed, but I don't see anything at all.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'd already called the seller and gotten an RMA number. I've bought from them before, and they've been great. I'll buy another D7200 from them, as soon as they refund me. Since I purchased through Amazon, they can't send a straight-up replacement. I have to be reimbursed and buy again.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

I am confident that once you get a good D7200, you will love it as I and many of the posters on this site do.
