AF-P lens compatibility

I just got off the phone with Nikon Tech support and Adorama.
The subject was about the AF-P FX version of the new 70-300. I figured the FX version would be better anyway, and it had the option to turn VR off. I ordered one from Amazon ( now on its way back ) and the only way I could really use it and get good focus was in Live View. If I tried to focus anything in the viewfinder, it was really hard to get it to lock on focus. The focus dot would just flash on and off with both arrows blinking one way or the other. I think maybe one shot in 10 would be in focus. The rest were way off. Once, in playback mode, I saw the red focus square in center where I focused, and a white square outside of the focus points. I don't exactly know what caused that one yet. Adorama told me they heard from other users that it would be best used as a manual focus lens on the D7200. Nikon Tech Support said it was due to an incompatibility in hardware between the two. I asked if there was another firmware update in the works to fix that problem and he said since it was a hardware issue, software probably wouldn't fix that issue. He did recommended that I buy the DX version of that lens since that issue doesn't seem to exist with it. That really didn't make any sense and became very confusing to me actually. It brought up the question Why? What is different between the AF-P FX version and the DX version?
If I had really known that I couldn't fully use the newer lenses, I might have kept the d7500... but I will wait and see. Maybe I will just get a good used older AF-S version and save 4-500.00. It was a sharp lens on my d610 when I had it. Should be ok on my d7200.

Nikon's own lens compatibility chart says the "P" lenses have a "limited Compatibility" with the D7200... then they describe that as "may need a firmware update"...

Sometimes I wonder what Nikon's support people smoke during their breaks...

Its hard sometimes to decipher anything those guys say... but at the end of the day, that lens and my d7200 did not play well together. Maybe the limited compatibility is that its a manual focus or live view only lens on older cameras. I might take my camera into a store and try the DX version on it and see if it does the same thing.

FWIW I have the original 70-300 VR and it is a very nice lens. A used copy might not be a bad idea for you. Sorry you are having these issues!

Thanks. I already returned it and Adorama is sending me a used e+ condition AF-S version. Should be here Monday.
The guy at Adorama told me that this isn't the first he has heard of this issue. A lot of people were buying this lens thinking the same as I did that the VR switch would solve the main issue of not being able to turn off VR. Nikon only stated that the incompatibility would need firmware update letting people think this would be the way to go. Nikon wants to sell these lenses so they won't put out all the incompatibilities of these lenses on what they consider older camera bodies. They are actually bundling the AF-P 18-55 and 70-300 DX version with the d7200. I'm not completely sure if my issue was due to the FX version of that lens only or not. Nikon says yes, I wouldn't have the issue with the dx version except I wouldn't be able to turn off VR.
I learned my lesson... I'm staying with AF-S version and older lenses that I know work :)
