Weird white spot gets larger at SMALL f-#s

This issue just started happening with my D7200 (haven't used it that much), on all lenses so has to be a camera issue. Have cleaned sensor twice. Not sure what it could be? It behaves opposite of a dust spot.

See the different between f/11, f/8, and f/1.8 (it gets much more noticeable BELOW f/8)

Any ideas? Some sort of light leak? Something to do with aperture? (But why camera related and not lens?)

Did you take eclipse photos with this body? Just curious because I saw a photo on Facebook showing someone's shutter or mirror that had an immensely tiny hole burned in it when he loaned his camera to his brother. The brother took sun photos a couple weeks before the eclipse. Wondering if there is a pin hole inside. What does it look like when you remove the lens without raising the mirror?

Try setting M mode with mirror up and no lens installed. With the first press of the shutter, the mirror will go up and you can look at the closed shutter. There will be one tiny rivet up in the corner that might look like a hole but its not. I don't know what a hole in the shutter would do to an image. Wouldn't it be more of a spot and a streak as the shutter moves? I don't know.

Here is the shutter melt guy. He never came back and gave us any details.

I'm not sure what it will tell you, but you can snap a picture with the lens off in manual mode. It will just be a total blur, but if you do still see the spots, that would tell you something is very bad.

Thanks for finding this, Nick! I honestly couldn't remember whether I saw that post here or in a Facebook group. That post contains the image I was referencing.

I got to thinking about this thread after reading this article on camera and lens damage from the eclipse. These are items that were rented and returned, and it shows some of the damage these items sustained.

I need to look into getting a solar filter. It was kind of cool to catch some sunspots. I want to play around with that some more. The nd400 filter worked for me, but it was close and I don't want to melt anything.

I've been thinking about getting one, too. It was kind of fun, but scary, to take the photos. I used a 9-stop and 4-stop stacked for mine. I could have used more though.

As for solar filters, I don't know if some are better than others. Some of the people who ordered the Lee filters through Amazon got a great bargain! Amazon wasn't sure if some of them were properly sourced (not sure if counterfeit), so they refunded quite a few customers. Then a day or so before the eclipse, Amazon said they were safe. It was simply a misunderstanding. Those cost at least $150 each. :eyetwitch:

i used a 10 stop and my variable ND to add up to 10 more so I could get the look I wanted. My only problem is it only fts one lens. my 24-120. I need to get a adapter ring so I can use them on my 70-300
