Photographing the Northern Lights

I am planning on attempting to photograph the Northern Lights here in Nfld Canada tonight with a tripod; lense is a Nikkor 50mm AF f/1.8D; not the best wide angle but will give it a try regardless & will use the built in timer. My question(s) are what settings should I start out with for the first test shots. My plan is to setup at the remote site before dark. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Sooooo.... What settings did you use last night???

I have a 7100, but close enough. I run full manual mode with my 10.5mm 2.8 fisheye anywhere from 10-30 sec exposure on f2.8 and iso 1600. You can play with the settings, but that should get you decent shots right away.

Thanks for the help with our settings, good place to start for sure. We never did see them the night we went out but will try some milky way shots when I return home.
