Lens Suggestions?

G'day from sunny Australia!

At the moment I'm heavily leaning towards the D7200 as an upgrade from my reliabable D5100. I don't have tonnes of cash, but I keep hearing that above anything else (even the camera body), how good quality lenses make the largest impact on image quality & performance.

So in saying that, I'm after a lens(es) that will offer great landscape shots, portraits, as well as a good walk around zoom. Any other lens suggestions will also be much appreciated.

I know the D7200 normally comes with the 18-140, however based on what I already own, I'm more inclined to buy the body only and purchase lenses suggested by you more experienced folks. :)

My current lenses are:

Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G
Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD.

Thanking you all in advance!

God Bless & cheers
Andrew

For a starting point why not get the 'Nifty Fifty' f/1.4 or 1.8. (just noticed the 35mm DX).

You say you do not have tonnes of cash but the 70-200 f/2.8 is a great lens or even the 24-70 f/2.8 these can later be transferred to a FX camera.
For wide angle landscapes Rokinon and Samyang make great 14mm lenses which I have used for everything from Milky-way to sunsets, lightning.

Others with DX bodies can chime in more on DX lenses.

since you where asked to take pictures, may you to use a flash in the church? Do you use a monopod or tripod? How are your post processing skill? (dark photos can turn out pretty good with good software)
1 st lens i would look at would be a fast (1.8) wide angle. (maybe used or refurbished)

I have a limited budget these days as well. I looked at a bunch of 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. I settled on a non-VC Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 that I like. It was very reasonably priced. I have been using it a lot. It is a bit slow to focus sometimes for fast action, but I have found I can use it hand held at church with Auto ISO to keep the shutter speed up. I am really happy with the lens.

I also have a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 that I use as well. I really like the result. It was suggested to me by a local shop that called it a low cost alternative to the 24-70 f/2.8

For wide angle I went with the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 and I have been very happy with this lens. It is a DX lens, but I really enjoy how it works on Landscapes and I can take group shots at the long end when there I am in a limited space. I really love this lens.

Now if I had the cash I would get the VC version of the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. I would also get the 24-70 f/2.8, but I am happy with these lenses given my budget.

I wish you well in this quest... it can be daunting.

No flash unfortunately. Things move pretty quickly so all the photography is handheld.

I'd second the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 - just be aware there are multiple versions of this lens, some of them have a built in focus motor and some do not. So if your camera is one that doesn't have the focus motor built into the body you'll want to make sure your getting a version of the lens that has the focus motor built in to the lens.

As for 70-200mm, Sigma made both an HSM I and HSM II non-os version in the Nikon mount, I've shot the HSM I for a while and it's a very good lens for the money. Haven't shot the tamron non-VC version but from a lot of the reviews I read they had some AF consistency issues so I shied away from them myself.

I recently upgraded to a used 70-200mm Nikon VR I - I looked at the Tamron VC version which was very highly reviewed, but the thing to keep in mind about the VC version is that apparently it doesn't work well with most teleconverters.

Hope that helps.

I would stick with the 35mm, sell the 18-105mm and get a used 18-140mm (plenty about and little extra cash outlay if you sell the 18-105) as it plays better with a 24mp non AA filter sensor a la d7200 and maybe save long and hard for the 80-400 g or 200-500vr and a macro lens for some of that aussie wildlife.

Shouldn't we say a few words, or at the very least pause for an introspective moment of silence?

Oh where's the love? The thread might be dead...but I'm not!

Seriously though, it was a decision I gave lengthy deliberation too, but in the end, the offer on the D750 was too good to pass up.

I was also going to suggest/recommend the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, I use the same f4.0-5.6 version for at least 70% of my work and am very happy with the results I get.
