Which Camera Body???

Hi guys

I posted this over in photography Q & A and I'd really appreciate your thoughts & suggestions as well.

I'm looking to upgrade my camera.

I currently have a D5100
and have recently been asked to take regular photos at Church.

These photos range from changing lighting (different colours & effects) inside the main auditorium capturing shots of the musos, speakers & pastor, to getting candid photos in the foyer (and often outside) after the service.

Although my shots are reasonable so far, even bumping the ISO to 3200 on my D5100 still underexposes at times inside the auditorium.

My current lenses are:
Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G

Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 Di VC USD.

So my dilemma is, here in Australia, a D750 (body only), will cost an extra $1,400. On top of that, I'll need to invest in more lenses. Or I could get the D7200 and buy 1 or 2 extra good quality lenses for around the same price.

Will the performance of the D750 be so much more superior in my shooting scenario outlined above considering the substantial extra cost? Will I notice a far better image quality using the D7200 compared to my current D5100?

Any camera & lens suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I apologise. I just joined Nikonites today. I posted it here as well, as I wanted some opinions from other dedicated D7200 users.

If this is not allowed, I'll delete this thread. Um...OK...how do I delete a thread?

I think you will find that most people just click on "new posts" or "what's new" (does the same thing I think) when they log on, that way all new stuff from when they were last on the forum will come up. Then just scan the threads looking for things of interest , covering all forums. I don't think many members would just stay in specific forums, you would miss too much that way.

Welcome to the forum, by the way :)

its a tough call, been thinking this over for a few years now, my advice is get the D7200 then start and gather a few FX lens, they will work fine on the DX, then go FX if its for you, its all down to what you like to shoot at. My dilemma is i like to shoot at birds so DX is better for the reach, but....?? Good luck and welcome.

Churches seem to be indicative of low light situations, and no flash... pick the camera body with the best low light characteristic. DXOmark is a site that compares camera bodies for those characteristics... Except for the 35mm 1.8G that you own, your other lens don't fit that profile... and I'd consider the 35mm a bit wide for personal interior shots... I'd suggest something in the 24-70mm f2.8 range, but doubt you're going to like those prices... maybe an 85mm 1.8G. Personally, I'd pick the D750 over the D7200...

I've taken some pictures at my church by request. Adding the Tamron 24-70 2.8 helped but it can still be challenging with my D7000 so upgrading to a camera with better low light capabilities is a future goal of mine. Most likely though I will try to add the Tamron 70-200 2.8 first and then save up for a new body.
Another big challenge in my church is changing light colors during worship; stage lighting and back-lighting that vary during the songs. Light color changes just as I'm pressing the shutter button creates some unusual results.

And if they use fluorescent lights, the flicker rate can yield some interesting images. ;) Photo taken of a video that was shot in a school using fluorescent lights. The colors changed to pale pink/ light purple in an instant.

Thanks for you thoughts Camera Fun. I too have some challenging lighting on occassion. Below are a few shots I got over the weekend to give you guys an idea of the various changing lighting conditions I shoot in.

id probably go a used d810 to be honest , im not so sure about the d750 i didnt like it in my hands when i tried it , its probably a stop better in low light then the d7200 but noise reduction is very good these days , got to say i love my d500 but i use it for wildlife it tracks like a demon and i can shoot to 3200 which cleans up pretty well and will push to 6000 if i have to, its about a stop better imo then the d7100 , its not bad on portraits either with the right glass
