I would like to use my D7200 for a video taping project and would like to have good sound quality. Any suggestions for a small mic attachment?

One big problem with the camera internal microphone is that it is right above the lens, and one objection is that it picks up the noise of the lens focusing motor. You might experiment a bit with that to understand the issue.

The hot shoe mics are supposed to be more directional forward, but that's not my bet. :)

You can use manual focus and avoid that issue.

If you are videoing people talking in front of the camera, best is when they wear the microphone. Then radio mics are good to avoid cables, but expensive of course. Or a 20 foot cord can help with that. The mic can clip on their collar and run over their shoulder and down out of sight, or even down inside their shirt.

If you are recording yourself talking as you video, then it is still good to get the mic away from the lens. I just coil up the 20 foot cord and put it in my pocket.
