I shoot mainly birds and am looking to get some info on the proper of correct settings for the b Metering/exposure menu area.

f4: Assign AE-L/AF-L button
g3 Assign AE-L/AF-L button
g4 Assign shutter button

My current settings for these are:

f4: AF-ON
g3: off
G4: Take Photos

Thanks for any info or explanation on this part of the menu. I have been finding that the kit I use sometimes tends to hunt a bit before obtaining focus.

The G menu is for movie mode. No idea, but won't affect your stills.

F4, either leave it as is or if you want to use back button focus (bbf), set it to af-on. If you set it to af-on for bbf, also turn A4 OFF to disable focus with the shutter button. Use bbf with af-c. Just ask if you want more details on bbf. Also check out menu A3 for shooting in af-c. Push the ? help button for an explanation of what it does. Basically it delays refocusing in af-c. I like it off for quicker tracking, but I need to play with it more next time I have my 150-600. A delay might help me when I fall off target. @Danno might be interested in menu A3. He was having some focus issues recently.

B menu, I never touch it, I keep it at default. Focus point modes are more what you will want to play with. Many like single point, but you might want to play with the dynamic modes for birds in flight. I mostly use single point and bbf. Good article on focus settings:

Another thing you might like, I reprogram my Pv button for spot metering. Its nice for those dark animals.
