Flashgun

First off it is called a Speedlight. What are you going to be using it for. That will narrow down your choices. You can go with a top notch Yongnuo (GN 60m (ISO 100 / 200mm)) for around $109 which is a great deal on a great flash or you can spend $550 and get the Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight Guide Number 34 m/111.5 ft. (at ISO 100, )

Several of us here have, use and swear by Yongnuo flashes. We have two, or three, Yongnuo flashes in my house and given the option, I prefer them over Nikon-branded speedlights.

you said it perfectly. im selling my 4 nikon flashes. the way things are going im not seeing any reason to buy nikon flashes anymore. im moving to third party flashes (shanny and yongnuo). they have everything that any pro needs.

I have a Flashpoint Zoom Li oN from Adorama. I am happy with the performance. The Li-On battery gives it a very quick recharge time. The GN is rated at 112 Ft@ISO 100 - 105mm zoom.

My friend would only ever shoot his Nikon branded speedlight, until he came on a Portrait shoot with me where I was shooting with a Yongnuo YN560 II, a Cristal CFG-1N and a Neweer TT560 and I was getting the same effect (light) as he was ...

It isnt about branding for me, if it does the job I need it to do (In the studio environment where I shoot them manual and on triggers) then that is what I will go with, I think I paid just over £100 for all 3 flashes :)

I also have a SB-700 and I agree that it is a wonderful Speedlight but I can buy several Yongnuo speedlights for the same price. I have one of each and they both do the same job.

Well if you need multiple speedlights that would definitely be a better option. :p

I'm thinking of going for the Altura Photo Professional Flash Kit for NIKON DSLR - Includes: I-TTL Flash (AP-N1001), Wireless Flash Trigger Set and Accessories
from Amazon. Any thoughts on this? I'm just looking entry level remote capable flash and the included wireless trigger seems like a nice bonus. All for little over a hundred dollars.

you can fire it off camera but you cant control power levels wirelessly. no way in hell its 68gn. if it does 48 say thank you and recycle is crap at 4 seconds. thats forever in photography. zoom head range is meh

consider the shanny sn600n. 1.8 seconds with eneloop blacks. faster to recycle than the Sb910. 1/3 stop less than the SB910 which is negligible. excellent and easy locking foot with water gasket. sells for $90. zoom head range goes from 14mm-200mm will work with the yongnuo 603II /622n slaves as well. I own 3 and getting another. I hate the dial to change power levels. I hate flashes which have a head tilt lock button. just consider it.

So far so good. Have been playing with it and I am happy with the unit.
This pic was taken with the flash i-TTL mode. DSC_0763original.jpgDSC_0763.jpg

Auto focus was good in low light (using the flash). The raw file retained the info needed to bring out the darker areas.
Not bad at f16 iso 100.
The lens is the Nikon 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 G ED VR AF-S DX Lens.
