Setting F-Stop/aperture manually without MAIN commnd dial?

New here and I have a big issue - my sub-command dial at the rear of my D7100 is no longer working. It's rubbed smooth and spinning without clicking, and I am not in a location where I can get it replaced due to this pandemic. I've looked but can't find a way to manually change it? Might be missing something very simply but never had to do other than use the dial for years! I had the same issue with ISO but found that setting.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome!

F5 in your Custom shooting menu allows you to swap the function of the main and sub command dials. You could set both shutter speed and aperture by toggling this function on and off.

Welcome!

F5 in your Custom shooting menu allows you to swap the function of the main and sub command dials. But you would then loose your aperture adjustment as it would move to the main dial. You could set both by toggling this function on and off.
Thanks for the welcome marilynne & needa.

My error - it's that main dial at the back not the subcommand that isn't working. I think the subcommand is going bad also.

is there a way to change all these settings electronically through the digital menu? I've only found the auto/manal ISo settings but none for setting F-stop manually in there yet.

Page 257 in the D7100 User's Manual has the information @bugmat.

Normally setting the aperture manually in M or A mode would be accomplished by turning the sub-command dial. There is no way that I know of to accomplish that by using a menu.

Hi , I’m a bit confused , it’s the front , Sub command Wheel that alters aperture . Maybe this from the manual can help short term , good luck E14EA6B9-8D32-4735-BC4A-17E16ED27FE6.jpg

Yes, the front dial controls the aperture. The rear dial controls the shutter speed or ISO. It you put the D7100 in Aperture Priority with Auto ISO, it should be a work-around until you get the rear dial repaired.

Yes I stated my thread title incorrectly - my problem is the main dial at the back that controls shutter speed by default. A workaround currently is setting it to Shutter mdoe as I can adjust the front sub cmd dial (though it feels like it could go at some point).

So now my shutter is fixed but at least I can adjust my aperture and I have put it in auto IS) to a limit to help compensate. usually I'd manually set all three constantly depending on the setings (as I photograph wildlife you can go from shade to bright sun in seconds).

Ugh. I use the +/- button on the top to increase/decrease exposure, but that requires the use of the rear dial. I don't know if there is any way to reprogram the EV compensation to use the front dial instead of the rear. If it's possible, hopefully either @FredKingston or @nickt can explain how to reassign the dial.

I don't think you can change which wheel sets the ev +/-. As far as I can tell, its always going to be the rear main wheel.
F5 reverses the front and rear wheels but not for the ev button.
F5 "On mode A" reverses for only for aperture mode. F5 "On" reverses for Aperture and manual mode. But neither affects the ev +/- that I know of.
