Remote shutter release will focus, but not fire.

Help, I’m losing my mind.
I have a radio frequency shutter release for my Nikon d7100, been using it for a couple of months and I love it. But suddenly it’s not working. It will focus my camera, but will not fire so it’s obviously not an issue of the remote itself. I’ve poured over everything I can find as far as the settings I need on my camera, I’m thinking I accidentally changed something one day while shooting. If anyone has run into anything similar please let me know.

Hi, and welcome!

I vaguely recall on another forum a year or so ago someone asked this same thing, and the answer ended up being an inadvertent adjustment to the AE/AF lock button. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact specifics, but searching around Nikon's site I came up with this. It may be what you're looking for. If not, hopefully someone here more knowledgeable than I will be able to help you.

Good luck, and hope to see you start posting pictures here soon!

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

Most likely something you changed in the menu system.

Dangerspouse, please check your link. All I see is Error: Unable to find URL to redirect to.

Aodelan WTR-2 is what I am using, however I'm taking self portraits from a distance (20+ ft) so using it as a wired remote is not ideal. :/

As far as settings I went ahead and did a factory reset, I'm still having no luck. I'm not going to give up yet though. :courage:

I'm wondering if the camera is attempting to focus, but not achieving focus. For a quick test, flip the auto focus lever on the front of the camera to manual focus. Try the release. If it works, then its probably a focus setting that needs to be figured out.

Check to see if AF C or AF S is being used. I have AF S set to actuate the shutter upon acquiring focus where as the AF C can take a shot once I tell it to. I would try to switch to AF C and see if that corrects the problem. Hope this helps.

I have a similar device and cannot make it NOT fire the shutter. That remote has a 2 stage button... 1/2 press initiates the focus, and full press fires the shutter... I suspect the remote's button may have failed. I've tried changing all menu options that have to do with focus/buttons and some settings will cause the device to NOT focus, but it always fires the shutter whether focus is locked or not.
