D7100 - trouble with "A"perture pref mode and depth of field preview button - FIXED

My new-to-me used lens arrived today. Time to take some pictures with it.

Put it on the D7100 and in A mode. Cannot change apertures with camera wheel, picture review shows it stuck at f22 (max value).

Unlocked the lens aperture ring and noticed lcd shows apertures change as they are changed by turning the lens aperture ring.

Tried the depthOfield preview button, - nothing. Reasonable I suppose, seems the camera/lens is already stuck at max F stop number.

Ok, put on another lens (which also has a max F stop lock) - same symptoms. OK, that means its the camera being weird.

Tried both lenses on my D90 - no problems, both work just fine.

Back to the D7100, check menu to see if I have reassigned the DOF button, yes that's it. But cannot get changes made in the DoF button option menu to 'stick', hoping to get 'preview' to stick. Must be 18 choices.

Tried two green dot reset - no change to the problem/s.

Took out battery for a while - no change, ("A" function does not work on the lenses, no DOF button reset-able to its default in menu, camera/lens combo is stuck at max F stop)...

The fix was to use the top menu item "reset custom settings" - all works OK now, both lenses. Except that I've not got some work to do to get my favorite settings setup.

Wondering what strange mode I put the camera in that actually disabled the ability to set set apertures in "A" mode and to make selections in f3 "assign preview button" ?

What lens do you have? It would be helpful to know the full nomenclature (e.g. 55-200 /f4-f/5.6 AF-S G). Not every lens, especially the older models, even though auto focus is plug and play.

not that it matters but two different lenses, the older AF screw drive Nikon types with an F stop lock on the lens aperture ring.

60 mm micro
and
28-105 mm

problem solved on the camera not the lenses

Funny thing, I don't often change any menu settings and have not in many months. Mostly I use the 35mm and 18-200 both are DX G types on the D7100.

If I am understanding this right, you have some D lenses. They are locked at max and you cannot change aperture with the wheel. But you can change the aperture with the wheel itself? If that is the case, then its probably menu f5, controls - aperture setting. It lets you use a D lens by turning the ring rather than the default of using the command wheel w/ring locked.
And yes, two button reset does not do it all, you have to reset some things separately. The manual lists exactly what the two button reset does.

Thanks nickt

my google research this morning confirms that f5 set to aperture mode would give all my unhappy symptoms with the AF-D's yet G lenses would work as expected if f5 set to aperture-ring

and the reset on its menu would get things back to working fine (which solved my problems)
