What's Up With This?

This afternoon I took a few photos with my D7100 near the river then transferred them to my computer when I got home. Slot 1 is NEF while slot 2 is jpeg. This is what I saw when looking at large icons in their respective folders:

Nothing appears out of the ordinary so I decided to edit the NEF flower. Did a little general editing, but the left side is how it came out of the camera:

Hmm...so I opened the jpeg and this is SOOC only resized for the forum:

Okay. That's bizarre especially after looking through the folders again. So I enlarged the folder icons to Extra Large which finally made it show up as this:

But when viewing the icons at a large size, there is info in the flower's file which shows more of the leaf that is cut off here. So two questions...what caused these files to appear this way? Once I transferred the images to my computer, I reformatted both cards in camera so the files are now deleted. Is it a write error? And why on earth are they displaying differently in the jpeg folder when I switch from large icons to extra large? Any ideas?

Before I did anything else I would take the camera out and shoot a few more to see if the problem is still there. I am thinking you had some sort of write problem either in the camera or when you transferred them to the computer. Shoot again and see if it happens again.

I'm hoping to check it tomorrow. Hadn't thought of the possibility of error when transferring the files to the computer, but something must be up in camera since the same image on two different cards was affected. It's strange....

Have you tried viewing these images with different software? Or moving them to another device? Maybe email to your phone and view. Its hard to imagine a write error making such a perfect error. I would expect something totally random or the file not recognized at all. When I have seen bars down the side of images, it has always been a software problem. It could be just in the viewing or maybe something did it during the copy and its permanent, but it does not seem like a hardware problem. I don't really know though, just thinking out loud.

Yes but it still shows up. Am guessing it was just some type of glitch because I went out around noon today and took a few images. Everything seems normal now.

I agree with Don on the write issue. Always format, and you may already being doing so, each time you put your card in the camera to shoot.

Yes, I absolutely format both cards in camera after the images are transferred to my computer. Must have just been a weird glitch. Seems to be okay now. :)

When dealing with computers (and yes, digital cameras are computers), you must always remember the old Gary Larson cartoon that shows a scientist with a while lab coat in front of a blackboard filled with complex math equations, and down in the bottom right corner of the blackboard is written, "and then a miracle occurs"

Perhaps a glitch or a sign a card may be going bad?

Possibly, but I've hardly used the camera since putting these Lexar cards in it. I am going to keep them in it while watching closely to see if it happens again. I do have other cards to use but am curious. Since then it hasn't happened the two times I used the camera. Of course, I realize I might lose something spectacular, but I kind of doubt it. Lol. ;)
