Locked up -- Camera, not me

Today, while shooting a rodeo, I had the camera "Lock Up". It was working fine and I took a shot. Went to take a peak at the shot because of having difficulty getting a decent exposure from shade and bright sunlight. Anyway, I didn't get a preview and I noticed the green light indicating the camera was still writing to the disk was on. I waited for it to go off thinking there was a buffering issue. It never went off. In desperation, I turned the camera off, but it did not go off. I turned it on and off and tried other buttons too. No change. Finally I just removed the battery. Waited a minute and put the battery back in and all seems to be working fine. I am baffled at what would have caused this behavior. Anyone else have this or have any ideas. SD card was freshly formatted in the camera. Over 200 shots had been recorded on it today before the problem. After removing battery and putting it back in, the pictures still were ok and it continued to record probably about 60 more shots.

I've had a similar thing in the past (D7200). I was shooting an F/A-18 Hornet taking off and it locked up, can't remember if it was still writing as i was in a rush to get it back up and running, but the camera wouldn't switch off and I had to do the battery removal thing to get it going again. A dodgy SD card was the culprit with mine

Thanks Jay. I will be watching it and will be purchasing a couple of spare SD cards for the future. I don't usually take a lot of pictures at one time. It had been awhile since I formatted the card because it doesn't fill up that fast. I formatted it in the camera last night in anticipation of today's excursion. After transferring files, I think I will format the card in the computer and then reformat it in the camera and then watch for glitches. Ha!

The only reason i'm sure it was the Sd card was that i'd taken a punt on buying a refurb card on the cheap and thinking it might be worth a punt. The card has 'refurb' stamped on it and that should have been warning enough really. It was working fine until it froze. It still works but i don't use it now obviously. Its never happened before or since with any other cards and the event was a good couple of years ago

I've seen this too with a problem card. The camera will always try to finish a write even if you turn it off. Like when your buffer is full with a slow card and you switch the camera off, it will finish writing. If the card is bad it keeps on trying.

Sounds like the camera has had it, needs replacing with a D500:rolleyes:

My D7100 started playing up the other day too whilst I was at the coast. The top LCD wasn't displaying my settings and later I figured it was stuck only allowing me to change the file type from RAW to JPEG etc. with the command dials. It was intermittent at first and then seemed permanently stuck. I was frustrated for a second but then the thought of a D500 replacement started going through my mind and suddenly I wasn't so bothered. I pressed a few random buttons, switched off and on, removed lens and replaced it and after one of those things it started working fine again. Still not sure if the camera was playing up or I'd done something. Anyway, nonew D500 for the time being.

My D7100 did the same thing when I was taking drama photos at the local high school. Card 1 slot is RAW and card 2 is jpeg. Usually I shot 300+ photos in one evening and even took 500+ one time and 800+ another.

During this one and only instance, the green light stayed lit forever. Can't remember if I waited or removed the battery as it wouldn't shut off. The camera was mounted on a tripod so I doubt I removed the battery. The balcony area was very dark, and they didn't allow lights up there. My cards are always reformatted in camera after every outing. In fact, I number mine 1 & 2 so I insert the same card back into the same slot. It never happened again.
