Covering viewfinder

When shooting long exposures in bulb mode what do you guys use to cover the viewfinder? its a pain having to remove the eyecup and fitting the eye cover which is fitted to the standard strap, but i always use a blackrapid strap and have to fiddle around looking for the cover.

Yes, I cover the viewfinder for long exposures. To accomplish that I toss a lens cloth over the top of my camera.

Depends on the amount of ambient light and length of exposure. With a 9-10 stop ND on a bright day if the sun's behind I may go with a cloth, otherwise I just cup my hands or hold a baseball cap over the eyepiece without touching the camera to keep direct light from hitting it. For night shooting I worry a lot less provided there isn't a strong light around. I love the level pull on the round eyepieces of my D500 and D800 and wish they'd put it on more bodies.

A roll of electrical tape is an essential accessory in any gear bag. Just tear off a piece and cover the eyepiece with it.

my thumb works fine, and I never forget to carry it...
I wouldn't want to stand there with my thumb pressed against my camera for a thirty-second exposure, much less something like two-minutes or more; there's too much risk of transferring vibration in my opinion; not too mention it would get insanely annoying after about one shot.

Doing a 6hr timelapse this would not work ;)
HA! I'd like to see that!

I try to keep my lens cloth as clean as possible personally. Wouldn't that contaminate the cloth more than necessary or do you use a separate cloth for this?

I love me some gaffers tape but 99% of the time I work with blue Painters Tape instead; it's significantly cheaper and I find it's easier to work with.
