Exposure issues and camera "freezing"

When I am using the Altura flash on my d7100, I get one picture where the exposure is perfect and the next several are very under exposed. This only happens when the flash is on. When I am using the built in flash, I do not have a problem with exposure, however, I can only take 2-3 pictures before my camera "freezes" and it doesn't allow me to take anymore photos. I have to wait several seconds and turn the camera on and off again. I am currently using the kit lens but it happens with the 50 mm as well.

First off Welcome to Nikonites. I am not familiar with the Altura Flash, but my first guess is that you are trying to shoot faster than the flash can recharge for the next shot. That will result (I think) with a weak flash on the subsequent shots. The better the batteries in your flash, the faster it will recover. As to the built in camera flash. you may be running into a similar situation on recovery or just filling up the buffer of your SD card.

Are you shooting the shots in rapid succession or does it happen with a slow gradual shooting situation?

I would stop using the flash until you can try a common brand of flash and rule out that it's not your camera. Then, assuming it's not your camera, I would never use that flash again before it does some damage. Suggest going to a camera store and asking if you can try out a flash or borrow a friends.

Are you waiting till the flash is fully charged before you try and shoot a second photo? There should be a light that comes on to tell you it is charged. Check the manual on the flash to see. Normally it will take from 3 seconds or up to 10 or 15 if your batteries are very weak.

This one sounds like it is not charging between flashes, you need great batteries for faster recycle or you need to wait for a light or beep to sound indicating that the flash is ready.

Again sounds like a flash recycle issue, this time with the inbuilt flash, try waiting the 3 - 5 seconds as Don says and see if that helps. If there is not enough available light the camera will not shoot in certain modes like auto and will need time for the flash to recycle.

Maybe include images with EXIF data next time.

Cheers and welcome to the forum.

I agree that the flash is likely not having sufficient time to recharge. I have had that happen when I rush or accidentally have it set to Continuous High and am slow to lift my finger :(

Welcome to the forum. Good to have you here.

Thank you everyone! I have had this camera for over 2 years and this is a recent problem. I've tried resetting everything and I got a better SD card. When I first turn on my camera, I am able to shot in rapid succession. Then it stops and I only get 2-3 pictures. As for the flash, it happens when I just replace the batteries and it just started about a month ago. This is why I'm so confused, this a new issue. I'm hoping somewhere maybe a have a setting off.

If you are using the same batteries that you have had for two years (original), they can be losing the capacity that they had when new. Batteries may need to be replaced with new ones to get what you had. This is only another guess.

What battery do you recommend using? I bought one off amazon last fall but I don't know which one was the original. Thanks!!

I only have Nikon batteries, but if I were to buy a replacement I would probably look at a Wasabi. There have been a lot of favorable reports on here from people who have used them.

Up until last week all I used were Nikon batteries. Bought Wasabi a couple weeks ago and charged them and ran one through the grip. Had 700 + with 18% left on the first charge. That was better than the Nikon out of the box. It took a few charges but I get 1100 + shots on a battery. Expect the Wasabi to do as well. Also use Enoloop batteries in the flash
