can a 70 / 200 f2.8 lens be calibrated / fined tuned local guy at a camera shop does not think so
Depends on the camera body; some bodies support Auto-focus fine tuning, others do not.

As for the lens itself, I calibrated the AF on my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 on both a D7100 and a D750 just fine.

@bikeit I think the confusion between the camera shop and here is what is being stated. Technically (without changing things mechanically) the "lens" cannot be fine tuned, but the D7100 can compensate ("Fine Tune") for the lens. I believe that the camera software basically can be set using the fine tuning (Don mentioned) to compensate for any "disagreement" between what the camera thinks is focus vs what the lens actually focuses on.

IOW the camera body is changed software wise to make the lens focus correctly.

Someone can correct me if I am all wet. Ha!

I think you did a perfect job of explaining it. It is the camera and not the lens that gets adjusted.

A little additional information. Each AF lens that you use on the camera has to be tuned separately. They are all different. Once done your camera will know what lens you have on and compensate for it.

All Nikon Cameras starting with the D7000 and up can and need to be Fine Tuned. Ones below the D7000 do not have this feature.

Got the lens fine tuned took a few tests shots at F2.8 and they are tack sharp, the guy was using the Reika Focal software, give me a full rundown before during and after, and all the print outs off the test he carried out.

It is called https://www.reikan.co.uk/focalweb/ Reikan FoCal and it is what I have been using for a long time now on all my cameras and lenses. Remember that each lens has to be done separately and then the camera will remember the setting and set it for the correct lens when you change lenses.

Worth the money to buy it and DIY from now on.

What did he charge you to set it for you if I may ask?

Just looked at that software, is it difficult to understand the process?

It walks you through the process. A couple items you need to know first like how far away to have the target. A couple of special items on printing the target that really help the process. Not on my computer right now or I would go over them. If you decide to buy it let me know and I can walk you through it
