Eye-Fi SD Cards

Does anyone use them? Any particular brand? Not recommended at all? They seem like a pretty cool way to transfer. Just wondering.

Eye-Fi is a brand. As far as I know it is the only one that makes something like this.

I do have one around here somewhere but it has been a long time since I used it. Was not a fan of it at all. Seemed slow and it really took a long time to do anything with it. Faster to just pull the SD card out and stick in in the computer. Now for transferring one or two to your phone while out in the field I have the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter. I hated this adapter till recently and someone suggested that you needed to switch the iPhone into Airplane mode. Since I did this it works like a charm. Yesterday I was shooting 3 hours from home but wanted to post a photo to Facebook I could look at my photos on my camera (D7100) and pick the ones I wanted to download. Then brought it up on my phone and did a quick edit there and posted the photo.

So to answer your question....What do you want the Eye-Fi card to do. If you want to use it to download all your photos to your computer then save your money. It is way to slow. If you want to transfer a few to your phone while out in the field then get the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter. It is cheaper and better. It also has other things it can do.

I find it convenient if you are on the road and do not have access to a laptop/computer.
I have the EyeFi, and will probably try the Toshiba Flash Air. From what I gather, you can transfer individual files instead of being stuck to transfer all files like the EyeFi.
So you can transfer with either media onto your tablet for quick editing, which is what I like the most, then can post to a social media site or your own website on the fly.

Initially I was turned off by these cards after reading Don's post but after reading A LOT about the Toshiba Flash Air 3rd generation card, I think I will try one of those. I don't use facebook or any of those sites but when shooting jpeg transfer to PC, from what I've read, is pretty quick. At the very least it's another SD card for storage.

One thing I was wondering about was usually when you insert a card the first time, it get's formatted......wouldn't that wipe out the wi-fi program or whatever it's called on the card?....or how would that work?

I use the eyefi card to transfer pictures to my iPad when on the road or on vacation when I do not have access to my iMac or a laptop. I can do some quick PP with the Lightroom mobile and Photoshop Fix apps and send some good pics to family and friends.
It is a slow transfer and also a huge battery drainer. I only switch it on to selectively transfer pictures.
For me, it a 'nice to have' thing but can also live good without it.

Sorry can't give you too much more info on it as I regularly clear out my card from doing transfers.

Just a quick note about the Toshiba Flashair Ver. 3.0

I could not get it to work. The instructions are sketchy and no help from Toshiba was available.

Steps 1 & 2 are inserting SSID info and password but step three is "turning the card on" and the error message I kept getting was "wireless not turned on this computer"

I have 2 iphones, 2 laptops, 2 printers, a Kindle, a Nextbook, and another computer out in my workshop connected to my wireless network.......I don't think the problem is me.........

Go with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter. once I figured out that I needed to turn the iPhone to Airplane mode it works great. I also have the benefit to operate the camera from my phone with live view to the phone.

WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter $39

Eye-Fi Pro X2 card 16GB $75

Well, all I wanted to do is use the SD card to transfer pictures to my PC. I don't use any social media and I don't want to control my camera with my iphone. And isn't coming in from a shoot, plugging the WU-1a in and d/l the pictures pretty much like coming in from a shoot, plugging the data cable in and d/l the pictures?

The features you mention are pretty cool....IF that's what you want to do. I just wanted to come in, set my camera down and let the pictures get transfered.

If all you want it to do is to transfer photos to your computer then save you money and take the card out and plug it into your computer. It is much much faster and less trouble.
