Need backup for d600

Not looking for another FX, need a backup as I have several things coming up. Don't want invest thousands into another new body or changing formats. Need a similar quality backup, ignoring FOV. I know the differences between DX and FX.

So with that said.

Not saying the 600 is better, so not really looking at contest or anything like that. I need to know if you are happy with your 7100. I need similar quality resolution as the 600.

My camera is at the shop for 30-45 days, my wife reminded me of the upcoming prom and graduation as well as some other things that I need another body for.

All lenses are FX, so not part of the equation.

Just need valuable responses. The prices are too hard to pass up and it will primarily serve as backup role after I get my main body back.

If you shoot portraits then please let me know your feelings on the 7100.

Concerns
- portraits
- prom
- graduation
- sports in daylight

I can't take not having a camera, but need to keep the investment down.

I have been looking at higher end bodies, upgrading, mirror less and so forth. I want something similar, useable, with good quality images. I can't get the 810, DF, D4 And so forth at the moment so those are out. Even the 750 is out for now.

Despite the buffer issues, has the 7100 let you don in any shape for, or fashion?

I had the 7000 before the 600, so would like to get something more current than that if possible.

I think the D7100 would be a perfect backup camera. Factory refurbs going for 700.00 dollars, and no. It has never let me down so far.

I use the D7100 and D600 as you know. They compliment each other nicely and have some areas of overlap. So I would say that my D7100 in most cases can back-up my D600 pretty well. Additionally, the button layout is near identical and allows me to move seamlessly between the two.

So why not another D600 body? They are pretty inexpensive on the used market, arguably priced below their actual value due to popular misconceptions about the shutter and oil spots. Sub $1k for 24mp FX.

I'm another D600 and D7100 owner. IMO the D7100 is a very good backup when I need it and shines with my Tamzooka and macro lenses.

I'd go 7100. I have the D800 and my wife has the D7100. We also have a second 7100 which is our shared backup camera. I use the spare 7100 when I use the Tamzooka as it gives better resolution than the D800. I would have no big issue if my only camera was the 7100.

I also purchased a Fuji X100T recently which compliments the DSLRs very well but that's probably a different conversation.

D7000 would be great.Glenn is correct. Personally id consider the d5300 also. Great iq as d7100. Great video. Articulating lens. No motor though so only afs. And no 2nd dial so through menu. D300s would also be great. If u can go d600. Alwsys comfortable working with 2 similar bodies. Theyre very cheap.

Well considering how many different models of Nikon I've owned in the last 2 years or so, I may not be the one you should pay a attention to! Lol But I think it would depend on what you want out of your backup camera! If your just looking to backup your D600 then I'd say another D600 would be the way to go! But if your wanting to make use of the advantages a different model might offer, then I would say either go up to a D800/D800e used or to a DX model like the D7100! Considering cost is a very important part of what you can or can't get, I would recommend the D7100! It would be a good DX combo with your FX D600! :)

Kevin, I don't use my D7100 for any of events you photograph so I can't help you there (no knowledge of buffer capability either). My main reason for getting the D7100 was for photographing the dramas and to have a decent back-up camera. Previously my D90 was my back-up, but its high ISO/low light performance left me wanting for more.

The D7100 is MUCH more capable in low light/high ISO situations...it is very similar to the D600. For me, the only problem I encountered is that the rear ISO button is not in the same place on both the D600 and the D7100. When I went to change the D7100's ISO in the dark, I hit the wrong button which changed my RAW + Jpeg Fine setting to something less desirable, but I didn't realize it at the moment.

Sorry I am not able to answer your questions though.

Having the D610 and D600 combo would probably be the best pairing for keeping same FOV and exact same button layout. With the D750 being out now, the D610 is even more affordable.

I do like the D7100 and D600/D610 combo though, if you're wanting to have both a crop and full frame body in the bag. The D7100 has the upgraded AF system over the D600/610, but the button layout is pretty close to exact. With the D7200s being out now too, the prices for the D7100 have gone down too ... especially if you don't mind a refurbished body for your backup body.

The way I read it, the D7100 is the only option at the moment.

I think the D7000 will still get the job done.

The only issue with the 7000 was I couldn't push the ISO as much as I can the 600. Which I believe the 7100 and 600 are fairly close. But again, this is not a primary concern as my thinking related to sports is I would use both and have the close up lens on the 7100 and the long one on the 600.

Its not really the only choice, I could try and pick up another 600 but was just wondering about the 7100 series and their value. Was actually looking at the 7200 but I just dont see enough on it yet and not sure I could get one soon enough.

D610's I have seen are almost low enough for a backup, just trying to keep cost down a bit because this will eat into my 300mm lens fund.
