Firmware and Lens Distortion Data Upgrade Available for D7100

I've never ever received an email from Nikon about any camera firmware updates.

but, in their defense, as much as I and people I know, buy/sell/trade Nikon cameras outside of any reasonable time frames, Nikon would have no record of which cameras I own... or don't own...

If they continued sending notifications for cameras I registered, they'd be sending me 50 emails a year for cameras I no longer own...

I think if you are using ViewNX (or other Nikon proprietary software), another free app called Nikon Message Center gets installed.
You have options in the preferences, if i remember correctly.
This supposedly notifies you of updates to the registered/attached camera firmware.

I use 'supposedly' cos out of personal experience, the updates were really slow.
There was an update in July i think & i updated in Nov.... the message center was showing latest update from Jan

Can anyone who's updated and uses third party batteries confirm the firmware hasn't caused any problems with them. I use 4 non Nikon batteries that perform very well and would hate to lose them. I'm sure I can remember something about a firmware upgrade on another Nikon camera model causing problems.

I only use Non-Nikon brand batteries in all the Nikons I've ever owned and have had no problem. I just updated my firmware on my D7100 and it works with all my non-Nikon batteries!

I really have been trying to trace down the origin of that myth/superstition about non-Nikon batteries not working with some Nikon cameras. I now work in a camera store and have never seen that problem and I get my non-Nikon batteries for practically nothing!!! (btw, fyi camera batteries are marked up 5x - 10x in camera stores! e.g. a Promaster brand EN-EL15 cost $4.50 and sells for $49.99 shhhh.....)

We, the consumers, have to pay for the electricity, wages, transportation, plus enable the companies to make a nice little profit. I guess that's why we get the shaft on things like batteries. Not as much profit margin on the rig, itself.

My son, who worked for Best Buy at one time, quoted me the costs for cables such as the HDMI's. It was outrageous what the markup was.

True - you can buy any Nikon DSLR from Amazon or B&H for less than what they (Nikon) will sell to dealers - that's why we don't carry them anymore. And if you buy one from a brick and mortar store, the only way they make money is to sell you add-ons like UV filter, extra battery, camera case etc.

It's a shame to see all the camera shops go down.....I would have supported them, but the ONE we have here in Durham doesn't carry that much.....pretty slim pickin's.....so I rarely go there. @yauman

I used to own two camera stores. We were lucky to make $5 on a $300 camera. What we had to do was teach them how to use the cameras and do that by looking at and showing them how to improve the photos. We also has one hour labs so we for all their photo finishing

I feel for you Don....people don't realize that you have to really love photography or whatever your selling to be sucessful, and then the big guys phase you out. I'm sorry to see you get out of it, but I understand it. You just couldn't compete with the big box stores or mail order.

This was 28 years ago. I did sell out before the big box stores started dominating the market. I then went to work for a large photofinishing company. CPI Photo. They owned CPI One Hour, Fox Photo and Sears Portrait. I handled the 7 Southeastern States for them. It was fun. I retired from them when I saw that the market was was starting to trend towards digital. Worked from home writing safety software and web hosting.

The camera store I work in has been around since 1947. The only way we survive is selling old - ancient cameras - to collectors or to photographers who are still into large and medium cameras. We also do ok selling used gear on our eBay store. But we are hanging on barely - every month, we are a few UV filter and battery sale away from folding! Like Don said, we spend a lot of time explaining to patrons how to use their point and shoot or why after returning from shooting with a 24MegPixel Nikon D7100 on an African safari, they cannot make a 4x6 print without pixellation (yes they don't have long enough lens to capture the leopard and did a post-production crop resulting in a 500x400 pixel image of the leopard - sure looks good on the screen!!!!)

Sorry - apologies to moderator for getting off-topic on this. So the Firmware upgrade all went well - it's good. Go for it!

I guess you've been involved in photography practically your whole adult life then.....what a wealth of knowledge. I bet you're one happy camper with the tide rolling the other night? I hope they get to play Fla. State in the playoff.
