New D7100 help!

1. I am using the single focus AFA "S" currently, but the same applies to all square settings. My questions is no matter how many squares I use- they never turn green --they always are red. 1/2 way down on the shutter and they are still red- even though the target is focused. The pictures are clear and focused. I just thought that I saw them green earlier today and now they are all red (the squares and never turn green) I am wondering what I am doing wrong now.

2. When the camera is off the display on the top right reads 1.3 and it never goes away even when off. Is this suppose to be there?

3. I like to use the eye finder when taking photos. My wife uses the LCD screen when taking photos. To do this (use the LCD to take pix) we push the LV button in..correct? When we do this the target(s) are on the screen - but there is one square which turns green - but when we take the picture it takes alot longer to appear on the lcd and it almost sounds like the camera is trying to double exposure or something before I see the image. Is this normal? Is there a different set up when taking pictures using the LCD screen?

Thanks

Re: New 7100 help!

1. I think they are always red.

2. Probably indicates you are in 1.3 DX Crop mode. This is a shooting setting that allows you to shoot in a cropped mode to emulate using a telephoto. You should turn this off. Page 64 of the manual.

3. When you snap a picture in Live View, the sound is the mirror flapping down, then up to expose the image. A little clunky sounding, but normal.

Re: New 7100 help!

Thanks. In menu-shooting menu- image area - I have always had DX 24 x 16 selected. So I don't know what that 1.3 K means when the camea is off. It also has a 1 at the top which I take to be the sole memory card in slot 1--but is this suppose to be all on when the camera is off? Here is a picture. IMG_0741.jpg

Re: New 7100 help!

You have 1,300 pictures or space left on your card, that's what the 1.3k represents. The "in-focus" indicator (inside the viewfinder) is a green dot at the bottom left corner of the viewfinder. When you see a left or right arrow instead of the green dot that is the camera telling you that it needs to adjust focus one way or the other.

You are correct about the memory card "1" indicator and yes, it stays on even when the camera is off.

Re: New 7100 help!

The autofocus points inside the viewfinder are always red. You're probably confusing the Live View mode with the viewfinder. BTW, I would suggest you encourage your wife to use the viewfinder to focus rather than Live View. Live View focusing uses a different method and consequently takes longer and not as effective as the normal focus detection when using VF.

Awesome. Thanks guys! Just set the D7100 up today and have been playing with all the settings. Love it--but so much to learn on it... PQ is excellent, though which is why I bought it.

Papa ST-- I have been trying to get her off the live view...so far no luck- but with the new camera- I will get there. Thanks for clearing up the red squares and the bottom left green and arrows.
When I was playing around with the settings and changed the setting to AFA D9. Why do all the squares show up when you change to a D9 or something similar and when you get take the picture you get the single square again? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Marilynne! I book marked Gandpaw's page for future reference and read a bunch of his tips. I am going to set up some U1 and U2 today!

Re: New 7100 help!

The D9, D21 etc setting uses a "cluster" of points for the autofocus. While looking thru the viewfinder, press the AF button (on the body next to lens) and you'll see the cluster light up and when you release, only the center of the cluster remains. That's a feature to not distract you - most the center square and the cluster will move with it - if you want to see the whole cluster most, hold down the AF button and toggle the navigation wheel and watch the whole cluster move.
