D7100 shooting with flash and auto ISO

If shooting with the flash in low light situations, does the auto ISO disregard the flash and set the ISO for the current low light?

I'm currently shooting with a D7000 and this is exactly what it does and it's driving me nuts. I mean, if the flash is on, why would the auto ISO set to, say, 5000 in low light?

Hi again Ian,
I just did a quick search out of interest, and yes the auto-iso on the D7100 is the same as the D7000. There is a number of articles about it on DPReview (I won't post a link to a different forum here) but if you google, you will be able to find the discussion near the top of the results.

Turn Auto ISO off then. The camera will still work. :)

There is no one answer - Nikon has implemented Auto ISO with flash three ways.

Older iTTL models (D300 and earlier) - Auto ISO stayed at Minimum ISO if flash was being used, because, well, we were using flash instead. For a hot shoe TTL flash, ISO would increase only if the flash had insufficient power to do it otherwise.

Next versions (D300S and later) - started doing what you said - Auto ISO is always adjusted for the dim ambient, regardless if flash or not. The flash always has work into high ISO. High ISO makes TTL BL be fill flash instead of direct flash, and the room incandescent is orange. But we can always turn Auto ISO off.

The few very latest versions, D800, D600, and I think D7100 (but not D7000) - it got better again. If flash is being used, Auto ISO with flash will increase only two stops, like to ISO 400, and will not go higher if flash is being used. This is about right for bounce flash.

For a Manual mode flash, Auto ISO should stay at minimum in all cases. We cannot set a Manual flash if ISO is bouncing around.
