Well, after much thought and persuading of the wife, I have just gone and ordered my D7100 body online..... It will be a jump from my D3100 and I can't wait! The D3100 has been a great camera to learn with over the past 3 years, but the extra features of the D7100 were too much to resist!!

While I wait for delivery, I have downloaded the HUGE manual.... Let the learning curve begin!

I went from the D3100 to the D7100 about 6 months ago, I am still learning the camera, and loving it every time I get to use it.

It is a bit of a learning curve to get used to the different controls etc, but once you get over that, you will love your new camera.

Darrell Young's D7000 book was a great learning tool for me. I suspect he has one for the D7100 as well. It's an intelligent walk through the manual with logical explanations of what each function really does, how and when to use various settings, and some good recommendations on how to set it for yourself.

I know some folks aren't fond of Nikonians, but their workshops are awesome. I attended one when I moved up from a D70s to a D300 about 6 years ago. The jump from a D3100 to D7100 is very similar. It was one of the best adult learning experiences of my life. In case you're interested, you can get more info here. I recently upgraded to a D800 and am seriously considering taking their intro class for the new body.

Congrats to your wife for letting you upgrade tell me your secret so I can update !! Have a great time learning the new toy!!!

I promised her a trip to Bavaria in the German Alps, Joe! We are going for our wedding anniversary, and also the Christmas markets will be on - So I "Need" the better camera to capture the holiday!

It is an expensive way of getting a new camera, but worth it!!

I'd stow away in your luggage but at 350lbs it'd be too expensive, have a great time!!!

I picked up my D7100 two weeks ago and shortly after Darrell Young's D7100 book on my phone. I'm going to second the suggestion to get it. I'm slowly making my way through it, but so far I can say that he gets very in-depth into the functions of the camera and still keeps it easy to follow. You start to see all the potential this camera has right from the start. It's full of information and one of the things I liked a lot, which BackdoorHippie mentioned, is that the author puts recommendations in there for how you could use certain settings. Obviously everyone is different but it's something I found useful.
