Back button focus?

Hi, I've set my D7100 up to use the AE-L/AF-L button on the camera to lock focus. Works perfectly.

On my knockoff MB-D15 (Neewer brand) the AE-L/AF-L button only locks the focus, the shutter button is still in control of focus.


Is this an issue with my ($30) knockoff battery grip, or does the real deal MB-D15 act this same way?

You can set the MB-D15 AE-L/AF-L button to do the same as the main camera one

...but better leave it the way it is now: you have two option, all the time! That's how I use my Taiwanese replica of MB11 attached to my D7000...

I overlooked that option in the menu...

i use the front preview button instead , i find the back button is a little far in near my nose , i prefer the front button and i use ae lock for ae lock only and the function button for spot metering.

@egosbar: good idea. I just started using the AE-L/AF-L for locking the focus having spotted the tip in Nikon Rumours.
I wish I'd thought of using the front buttons! Thanks
