Where to buy D7100

I am looking into possibly buying a D7100 within the next few weeks and wondering where to buy it.

Amazon wants around $1100 for just the body where as other websites have them for as low as around $750 and they say it is new. My only concern is that they may not be new or may be grey market. The only local camera store to me is Mikes Camera and they want my future children for it.

Anyone know why there is such a big price difference with them? I am looking to get it with preferably the 18-140 but possibly would go for the 18-105 as I have heard they are both good lenses.

TIA

B&H, Adorama, Cameta, Amazon, Best Buy, Crutchfield all have around the same price and all will not hose you. Prices that are too low will end up being trouble. Grey or they will get you on the phone and up-sell you or tell you its not in stock if you don't bite. You might find a refurb at one of the camera stores above, I would trust that too. Be sure whoever you buy from is an authorized Nikon dealer.

Stay away from thrones for$750. They are scams many strip all the accessories and then make you buy them extra from them raising the cost to over what everyone else charges. Refurbished cameras can be a great deal but I have only seen one dealer that offers a full one year warranty and that is www.cameta.com and I don't think they have then in stock right now.

Yes, Cameta is great with the 1 yr warranty on refurbs. I forgot to mention, be aware of marketplace sellers 'fulfilled by amazon'. Amazon ships it, but the camera is sold by the seller listed. I just noticed at the moment the body only on Amazon is coming from a market place seller that I don't know. Amazon is probably temporarily out of their own d7100 stock.

Also check to see if they list the warranty on the site. The impossibly cheap ones will not mention it anywhere on their sites or will the say US camera. They won't say Grey market but you can bet that they are. Same camera and it may be a wonderful deal unless you ever need it repaired.

I just went through this....as already noted stay away from the too good to be true websites. I searched more than a few of them and they were all trouble.

You can buy for a little less from Hong Kong or China but again, I don't trust buying from there.

The least expensive I found from a retailer was $899 for the body kit refurbished. I dont really recall with a lens as I was only looking for the body.

The $899 reburbished bodies went quick at that. I saw used ones sell for more than that.

i bought mine from hong kong and ive bought a lot of other stuff from hong kong , 1299 australian dollar for body and 18-55mm vr lens and 55-300 vr lens , be careful the cheaper deals are with lens without vr , the only problem and i knew it anyway was the camera was in chinese , very easy too set just hit the menu button and change language , it comes with one year warranty , im happy enough
it was delivered too my door in outback australia in about a 8 or 9 days
ive heard the 18-105 isnt a great lens but i guess the 18-55 and 55-300 arent the best either but they are still good , do some research on the lens you want , i wanted a start with nothing too buy for 6 or 12 months , ill buy the 105mm macro next too complete and that will be my main lens for macro and portraits its supposed too be very good
i can give you the link if you want

You live in Denver, and they only have one camera store? Really? I find that hard to believe.

All the camera stores around here all mikes camera there are a few of them around denver. There is another one called like denver pro photo or something like that but I've heard that certain mikes cameras are better. I guess a few years back there were a whole bunch of camera stores around here.

Okay so sounds like I'm staying away from the too good to be true and non reputable sellers. Thanks for the heads up guys! I knew there had to be something up with it.

I saw that adorama has a refurbished d7100 for 929 which sounds pretty good but I'm kinda skeptical on buying reburb. At least with spending that kind of money where I could get a new one for a little more. However most things on the site I have read with peoples experiences with nikon refurbished stuff have been very good.

the low ball offers, you need to dig into the fine print - usually grey market -. Check to see that the dealer is listed with nikon usa. Pay with a credit card - some cards will add another year of warranty.

thats true , i just looked at the deal i wanted and then googled the store for comments , there were a few bad comments but most of the time it is the buyer making a mistake , ive always had good dealings from hongkong

I think refurbs may have a bad rap from years ago (my dad would always say that the quality of a refurb wasn't worth the savings), but I haven't heard anyone here that's been disappointed in them. When I upgrade, it's something that I'll consider.

You can also think about it this way. When you buy a new camera, you're buying something that hasn't been tested in the real world yet... with a refurb, it's problem has already been discovered... and fixed. ;) That's partly tongue-in-cheek, but just partly.

I think refurbs are mainly early returns. A few might really be broke, but my gut says most of them are just from customers that changed their mind. They are not old worn out cameras that went back for refurbishing. They are new that may have had a problem during the store return period or maybe customer just didn't like it. Stick with the big stores above. Small shops might pass off a used camera as a refurb or claim an in-house refurb. Stick to Nikon refurbished from B&H, Adorama, Cameta. They marked the used ones as used. A nikon refurb will look and smell new and you will not find any sign that it was used.
