Re: Promblem with Sutter release button

Check your Focus Priority settings in the Autofocus section of the Custom Menu. If it's set to RELEASE it won't wait for the camera to focus before it shoots. I'm assuming that's what you mean when you say it goes all the way down. If not then perhaps you're pressing too hard and/or too quickly?

I experienced this when I changed from D90 to D7k

To me it appears as if the shutter button does have a less defined "middle" position which is a very personal finding.

Using focus priority rather than shutter button priority will sure help on pictures where no continuous focus is required.

The rest is "getting used to". Meanwhile I can handle it with gloves on as well but it still fires accidentally from time to time.
That's the benefit of digital - who cares about the wasted shot ;)

Consider using the focus button on the back side of the camera instead of the shutter release button, if this continues to be a problem for you.

I've had the D7000 for 20 months and am not aware of a focus button on the back of the camera. So excuse my naivety, but where would that button be? Are you referring to the AF-L button?

I'm sorry, I guess I've gotten too used to my D800 and assumed the D7k had one, too. I guess you'll just have to practice that light finger touch. Sorry I couldn't help...

You can assign the AF lock function to the AF-L / AE-L button
at the back in your user settings.

Understood, but that will only lock the focus on the last established focus setting, which was accomplished either manually or by pressing the shutter button half way. I don't believe it will actually establish a new focus setting and then lock it - unless I'm misreading the manual and experiencing operating error.

Re: Promblem with Sutter release button

Hi

There are two options:
AF lock which acts as you described

or

AF on which will trigger AF via AE-L / AE-F button instead of the shutter release.

Anyway you will have to trigger metering via the shutter button.

You can assign the AE-L/AF-L button to become your AF button, decoupling shutter release from focusing

I am not sure what you are telling us. You say the button automatically goes all the way down. Do you mean the button is loose and without spring? In other words, do you start to press and then it drops the rest of the way by itself? That would be broken.

Or are you expecting a click or a stop at the half way point? There is no click or stop or feeling at half way. It is up to you to just lightly press the button for the metering and autofocus to activate. If you do lightly press the button, does the metering come on and does it autofocus?

If you are just having trouble feeling that half way point, then you could reassign the ae-af lock button to focus as the others said.
