High School Football Photography with Nikon D7000

I was asked to help capture some photos for the high school football team for their yearbook and newsletter. I told the vice principle that I would volunteer to do it to save the school money.

What lense would you all recommend to use with the D7000? Keep in mind that I will be using my own money so I dont want to spend thousands on a lense that I wont use but 3 months out of the year. Your input is greatly appreciated.

If your going to do it right at least a 70-200mm f/2.8. Your not going to like the cost, so that's out.

Renting is not the answer, because your going to have to put down a deposit all most the price of the lens plus what it's going to cost DAILY to rent it.

With out breaking the bank all I can think of is a 55-300mm f/4.5 5.6. It's can be found in the $400 range. Should work well during the day, however under clouds, and at night this lens is going to be hungry for light and your not going to be able to feed it. I would not expect any stellar photo's from it unless it bright out.

Sorry

Any one else got any idea's?

You can get a 80-200mm 2.8 2 ring Nikon lens used for $700-$800 if you look around.
But if that's not in the budget you could use a 85mm or a 50mm 1.8 lens if needed.
The problem is you will have to wait till the action comes to you. That is if your on the sideline.
When I shoot HS football. I use the 80-200mm 2.8 2 ring Nikon lens.
With the crop factor on the camera it gives good reach at 200mm.

Here is a example of a pic using the 80-200mm 2.8 2 ring Nikon lens.

The Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 will be a good lens to use. However, its not just about having the right equipment but you'll also need good technique. If you can capture panning shots at lower speed, you will be able to lower your ISO quite a bit but I was never successful with that method.

200mm is still quite short for my taste. The Nikon 300mm f4 AFS would be better IMO.

Just to give you an idea, this is how my field of view looks like at 200mm using my D7000 and 70-200mm f2.8.

You've volunteered for a difficult and challenging job that requires faster lenses which cost money. You should have gave it some thought before volunteering before you commit yourself to do this task. There is nothing cheap when it comes to photography. It can be an expensive hobby.
