Shutter speed not changing when i use speedlight in A priority

Can anyone help???

I do property photography for estate agents, for years i've been using a d5000 with a nikon speedlight using A priority and changing both apature and exposure comp. to increase light in the pictures.

My problem is that i've started using the D7000 and using the same A priority settings, the shutter speed stays on 1/60 of a second and never changes when i change apature or exposure which means the light doesn't really change from one picture to the next - am i doing something wrong?

Any suggestions please?

Many Thanks
Adam

I think you're at the flash shutter speed in an environment that is not bright enough to go faster and is locked not to go slower in the flash sync setting. Point the camera at a bright light and the shutter speed will go up and change with aperture. I just tried this on my D300s and that's how it behaves.

If you activate slow sync flash the exposure can go much longer.

If you want to increase the brightness you can use the flash or exposure + - buttons depending on whether you want to reduce the flash contribution or overall exposure. The last bit may not be clear if you are not familiar.

If you raise the ISO the shutter speed will probably change also, as long as you reach a point that is greater than 1/60.

Basically you are seeing normal behaviour as far as I can tell.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice, turns out it was the flash setting. Changed to slow sync and "voila" shutter speed changes with apature.

Again Thank You,
Adam
